Umeå University - with its 29,000 students and over 4,000 employees - is an organisation in constant change and development.The university's researchers carry out excellence within several areas of research, and many of them are among the world's elite.We are one of Sweden's largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes.Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here.We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.1-2 PhD student positions in Computer Science The Department of Computing Science announces one or two open positions for doctoral studies (doktorandtjänst) in Computer Science (datalogi).Specific areas of active research within the department which lie within this area include theoretical computer science, software engineering, database systems, and natural-language interfaces.Of particular but not exclusive interest are the following: - Logic in Computer Science, in particular involving categorical methods - Formal Languages, in particular tree automata and their applications, and - Software Engineering, in particular software measurement or the application of formal methods to systematic software development.A PhD student position (doktorandanställning) involves primarily doctoral research and course work (forskarutbildning).The employment extends over a period of four years, provided that expected study and research results are achieved.The position may also include part-time work (up to 20%) involving teaching duties.If so, the total time of employment is extended accordingly.The Department of Computing Science has approximately 70 employees including 15 PhD students.Research at the department is conducted within a broad spectrum of topics, motivated by both fundamental questions and application needs.Please refer to www.cs.umu.se/index_eng.html for more information.Eligible candidates are required to hold a BSc or MSc degree in Computer Science or a closely related subject.Good communication skills in written and spoken English are also required.The application can be submitted either electronically or in paper form and should contain: - a cover letter motivating your application, which also includes a short description of your research interests within one of the fields mentioned above, - a curriculum vitae, - copies of degree certificates, - reprints / copies of Bachelors / Masters thesis, and other relevant publications, if any, and - contact information for three reference persons.The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen Chapters 5 and 7).
