The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Soil and Environment in Ultuna 1 PhD student in the research education subject: Soil Science Compaction effects on water flow and solute transport The climate of the Nordic countries is characterized by wet conditions in the autumn, winter, and spring. Most traffic situations in arable agriculture therefore imply a high risk of soil compaction.Soil compaction modifies soil structure and affects a range of important ecological functions.Compaction may induce preferential flow in macropores, which has been shown to facilitate transport of otherwise immobile pollutants such as phosphorus and pesticides to receiving water bodies. The aim of the PhD study is to investigate effects of compaction on pore size distribution and hydraulic properties, and linkages between hydraulic and mechanical properties and processes. The work includes experimental and modelling studies of compaction effects on water and solute transport. The PhD study is part of a larger research project on persistent effects of subsoil compaction, carried out in collaboration between researchers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU, Sweden), Aarhus University (AU, Denmark), University of Helsinki (UH, Finland), and Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB, Norway). Qualifications Applicants should have a MSc degree or equivalent in environmental science, soil Science, hydrology, civil engineering, or related fields. The applicant should be able to communicate well in written and spoken English.Good knowledge in soil physics and/or soil mechanics as well as experiences in modelling and/or programming are desirable.A MSc with at least 60 ECTS in soil science and/or related subjects are a requirement.
