2 Doktorer inom Quantum Acoustic with Superconducting Circuits

2 Doktorer inom Quantum Acoustic with Superconducting Circuits

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for highly motivated post-doctoral researchers to join our experimental research on quantum acoustics with superconducting circuits. The expected start date for these positions are during the fall of 2020. The deadline for applications is October 1st, 2020, but we will start reviewing applications on September 1st.

Information about the division
At the Quantum Technology division of the Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) department, we pursue state-of-the art research in quantum information science, microwave quantum optics, and mechanical quantum devices. We are also part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year initiative, started in 2018, for the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer.

Information about the project
Superconducting circuits based on Josephson junctions have emerged as an excellent platform for studying quantum physics in the microwave domain. Such circuits are also the basis of the leading architecture for quantum computing. The combination of the low dissipation and the strong nonlinearities present in the Josephson junctions provides a major advantage. In the last 5-6 years it has also become clear that it is possible to make these circuits interact with phonons via piezoelectric substrates, in particular we study interaction with Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs) using GaAs and LiNbO3 as substrates.

The first project aims at studying multimode SAW-resonators with a small free spectral range that are formed between two Bragg-mirrors on a GaAs substrate. One of these mirrors is made tunable by incorporating a SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) in one of the mirrors. This allows fast tuning of the effective mirror position and parametric driving of the resonator. Applying different tones to the SQUID results in quantum squeezing of phonons. The goal of this project is to investigate the possibility of creating cluster states in this novel and compact platform.

In the second project we study artificial atoms in the form of superconducting qubits that are strongly coupled to the phononic vacuum in the LiNbO3 substrate. This coupling gives rise to a Lamb shift which is interesting for several reasons. Firstly it is a phononic vacuum rather that a photonic vacuum, secondly the coupling is very strong, and thirdly the coupling is frequency dependent which therefore also gives rise to a frequency dependent Lamb shift. The goal of this project is to understand how these unusual properties modify the Lamb shift.

Major responsibilities
You will perform experimental research, both individually and as part of our team. You will also interact with the neighboring theory group. The work includes:

- Design and fabrication of SAW quantum devices
- Microwave measurements with nearly quantum-limited noise performance
- Analysis of the data and comparison to theory

You will take advantage of the infrastructure and expertise available in our team and division. Your research will benefit from regular interactions with our collaborators in Sweden and abroad. As a post-doc/researcher, we expect you to contribute to the informal supervision of younger graduate students.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
You hold a PhD degree in Physics, Engineering Physics, or Applied Physics, or you plan to defend your PhD thesis before Dec 31st, 2020. You have a strong interest or experience in at least two of the following areas: quantum optics, quantum acoustics, microwave engineering, cryogenics, nanofabrication, or superconductivity.

You are driven by scientific curiosity and by a desire to make a difference. You can confidently read, write, and discuss science in English. We will consider outstanding candidates with proven track record in any field of physics.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
