2 PhD in concurrent data abstractions for parallel data-stream analytics

2 PhD in concurrent data abstractions for parallel data-stream analytics

Arbetsbeskrivning

The PhD students will join the Chalmers Distributed Computing and Systems group, a high-profile group of researchers working on parallel, distributed and streaming data processing. Software systems supporting data analytics operate under stringent constraints for response times, throughput, scalability, and availability. By focusing on scalable, parallel, structural data sharing, we target principled data analysis and processing mechanisms that fulfill scalability and latency requirements for ML computations and data processing for cyberphysical systems use-cases.

Information about the division
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 270 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor's, Master's and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.

Major responsibilities
The research will focus on parallel and distributed data processing and its leveraging in data-intensive and ML-related applications.

The PhD students will join one of our ambitious projects, financed by the Swedish Research Council (VR), integrated in the group's research ecosystem:
- EPITOME - Summarization and structuring of continuous data in concurrent processing pipelines
- Relaxing concurrent data structure semantics for  scalable data processing while guaranteeing application requirements.

The PhD students will be supervised by Marina Papatriantafilou and Philippas Tsigas, who have successfully supervised to completion 17 PhDs, with follow-up career steps at institutes including EPFL, MPII, Darmstadt, Ericsson Research, Purdue, Maryland.

As PhD student you are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate your research results verbally and in writing. The positions  include 20% departmental work, mainly teaching duties.

Qualifications
To qualify as PhD student, you need a solid background in Computer Science and Engineering or elated discipline, corresponding to a master's level degree of at least 240 higher education credits, by the starting date. To qualify for the positions, you also have a well-documented track record of research interests and achievements on distributed/parallel/stream computing and systems, including both algorithmic aspects and programming. You have a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject, you are highly motivated, self-propelled, energetic, independent and with a well-developed analytical problem-solving ability. As a person, you are empathetic, loyal and have high ethical standards. Your communication skills in English (literal and oral) are of high quality. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 5 years.
