The Nonlinear Physics/Plasma Physics Group is part of the Department of Physics, Umeå University, Sweden. The group conducts internationally renowned research on a wide range of topics, such as plasma waves, space physics, plasma astrophysics, collective quantum effects, and nonlinear water waves (see www.phys.umu.se/plasma).Moreover, the group has an extensive collaborative network with international laboratories and groups. Umeå University, in northern Sweden, is a dynamic university with ca.4,200 employees and more than 28,000 students, of which 1,300 are in PhD programs. The Department of Physics at Umeå University has about 80 members with 30 PhD students (for more information see the department's homepage: www.phys.umu.se).A PhD student position in quantum plasma physics The candidate will participate in ongoing research concerning theory and experiment on collective quantum effects, leading up to a doctoral degree in Theoretical Physics. In particular, the PhD student will be involved in research on theory and modelling of collective effects that will come into play in e.g.state-of-the-art laser systems, for example ultra-high intensity laser-plasma interactions, astrophysical environments, such as pulsar magnetospheres, and cold laboratory plasmas. In particular, quantum plasma effects and detection thereof will be of interest. The position is funded for four years.Normally, the PhD candidate also participates in teaching within the department. The PhD position is planned to be filled by early 2007.Through the group's extensive research network, the candidate will be offered ample opportunity to interact with other research groups. Prerequisites include 120 points (180 ECTS-credits) higher education studies, of which 60 points (90 ECTS-credits) in physics.Previous experience in quantum plasma physics and collective quantum effects is qualifying.Applications should include description of past research accomplishments including a list of publications, curriculum vitae, and the names of three references, all in 3 copies. For more information, contact Prof. Applications will be discarded or, if the applicant so wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled. Your complete application, marked with reference number 313-525-07, should be sent to the Registrar, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden to arrive February[20, 2007 at the latest.
