Umeå University, in northern Sweden, is a dynamic university with approximately 4,200 employees and more than 28,000 students, of which 1,300 are in PhD programs.The Department of Physics at Umeå University has about 80 members with 30 PhD students (for more information see the department's homepage: www.phys.umu.se).A PhD student position in numerical modelling of the Earth's ionosphere/magnetosphere The PhD position is planned to be filled by mid 2007.Through the group's extensive research network, the candidate will be offered ample opportunity to interact with other research groups nationally and internationally.The Nonlinear Physics/Plasma Physics Group is part of the Department of Physics, Umeå University, Sweden.The group conducts internationally renowned research on a wide range of topics, such as plasma waves, space physics, plasma astrophysics, collective quantum effects, and nonlinear water waves (see www.phys.umu.se/plasma).Moreover, the group has an extensive collaborative network with international laboratories and groups.The candidate will participate in ongoing research concerning theoretical and numerical modelling of the plasma layer of the Earth's ionosphere and/or magnetosphere, leading up to a doctoral degree in Theoretical Physics.In particular, the PhD student will be involved in kinetic (e.g., particle-in-cell, Vlasov or hybrid) and fluid simulation and modelling of collective effects that are important for the dynamic processes of the Earth's ionosphere and its interaction with the Solar wind and with electromagnetic radiation.The position is funded for four years.Normally, the PhD candidate also participates in teaching within the department.Prerequisites include 120 points (180 ESTS-credits) higher education studies, of which 60 points (90 ECTS-credits) in physics.Previous experience in numerical simulations and ionospheric/magnetospheric physics is qualifying.Applications should include description of past research accomplishments including a list of publications, curriculum vitae, a research plan, and the names of three references, all in 3 copies.For more information, contact Dr.Applications will be discarded or, if the applicant so wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled.Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.
