The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Accelerator Scientist.
Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world’s most powerful neutron source. The Beam Physics and Operations Section is responsible for the study of the dynamics of the protons in the linac, development of the physics software applications for the control room and leading the commissioning and operation of the ESS linac.
Description of main responsibilities
• Collaborate and take an active role in the beam physics studies of the ESS linac.
• Collaborate and take an active role in planning the commissioning and operation of the ESS linac.
• Development of physics software applications for control and optimization of the proton beam, to be used during commissioning and operation of the ESS linac
• Participate in the commissioning and operations of the ESS linac.
Qualifications
You have a PhD or equivalent experience in Physics or a related field, with a good understanding of accelerators physics.
You have experience in design, modeling and simulation of particle accelerators, and practical experience from commissioning and/or operation of accelerators.
Broad experience in the following areas would be beneficial:
• Development of software and graphical interfaces, in particular in Java, Python, or similar
• Modeling and simulation of hadron linacs.
• Experience working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages is a plus.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
