Arbetsbeskrivning
Background.
Alternative fuels will play an important role for the future internal combustion engines. Fossil carbon dioxide must be reduced. There are several different fuels that will be used in the future. But we will face some engine issues with the fuel.
Suitable background
Volvo Penta believes this work will fit for one or two person with a genuine interest for internal combustion engines and global environmental issues.
Some interest or knowledge about the chemical process in the exhaust system (Nox-reduction) is an advantage.
To find out the extra service need for competitor engines will require internet searching work.
Description of thesis work
FAME Biodiesel require in general an additional service need (lube oil change etc). How does other engine manufactures specify the increased service need?
FAME biodiesel may contain P, Ca, Mg, K and Na, which will have a negative impact for the engine exhaust system. A summary of competitors service requirement is wanted.
Natural gas as fuel for combustion engines will have different combustion properties, depending on the tolerance within the standard. We need to know what the consequences will be with different properties (still within the standard). It will likely have an impact on cold start performance, maximum power, exhaust temperatures, emissions (Nox, PM, HC and CO). What can we expect, and what engine technology could be an alternative to minimize the problems
Thesis Level: The intention is Master level, but we can change/adapt it to fit Bachelor
Language: English
