Amanuenser inom AI pacing assistance for recreational runners

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for two student research assistants (20% of full time) to take part in an exciting project in collaboration with Göteborgsvarvet. This project will take the first steps towards building an AI coach for runners assisting with pacing during races.

Information about the division/the project
Every year around 50 000 runners participate in Göteborgsvarvet. Most of these are recreational runners, using the event as a motivation for including regular exercise in their daily life. Many are of course also further driven to improve on their personal record or hit a certain target time. Some might have trained very well and structured before the event, while other just turn up on the day. However, some participants will inevitably end up having an unpleasant experience, sustaining injuries, “hitting the wall” or in extreme cases even collapsing. There might be many reasons for this, but commonly the runner simply gets carried away and opens the race at a higher pace than they can sustain. As a result, the runner will at some point hit the wall, resulting in a significant drop in speed, perhaps having to resort to walking, or worse, having to abandon the race altogether.

Our goal is to develop an AI coach to help recreational runners with their pacing during the race. This will assist them in staying within a manageable pace and finishing the race as a pleasant experience, with less risk of injury or collapse. In the longer term, this work will be part of a larger planned project coordinated by GoCo in collaboration with Göteborgsvarvet and several researchers at Chalmers and Gothenburg University.

Job description
