Northvolt has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Analytical Chemist to join our bold Quality Control team at Northvolt Labs, Västerås, Sweden and play a key role in analysing and evaluating raw materials and intermediate products from Northvolt’s Li-ion cells production and development.
In joining us you will play an important part from the very start in establishing a centre of analytical expertise for battery material analysis and characterisation within the Quality Control laboratory in Västerås. Northvolt will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society. We are continuously building a team of experienced Analytical Chemists and great leaders with industry background.
You will be in charge of developing, defining and implementing the analytical methods for analysing materials and intermediates for Research & Development and Production, reporting to the Quality Control Manager. Furthermore, you will be responsible for developing quality standards, procedures and documentation associated with the analytical and laboratory work including running the analyses using a range of analytical instruments. You will also be responsible for reviewing the quality of new raw material sources and work with the R&D team to evaluate and compare material and product quality.
The Analytical Chemist will be an expert in analytical methods and instruments which includes deep knowledge in handling of instruments, interpretation of results and reporting. Especially, we are looking for someone with extensive experience working in analytical laboratories. Previous industry experience working in a quality control laboratory, specifically with hands on experience in ICP-OES, ICP-MS and IC is a plus. You will play an important role to support Research & Development and Production teams in analysing raw material and intermediate product quality and characteristics, collaborating with Northvolt Supply Chain, R&D and Production teams cross-functionally in a multicultural environment.
You should be analytical and logical with an ability to identify opportunities and improvements to drive increased quality through data driven approaches. You should have strong technical abilities in order to succeed in this role.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Drive the development, validation and implementation of new analytical methods for raw materials, intermediates and finished products.
Run analytical testing on a range of instruments including interpretating, reviewing and reporting data/results to our internal customers.
Hands-on expertise in the following analytical techniques ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, BET, DLS, TGA, DSC is a plus.
Maintain analytical instruments to a high standard.
Drive operational excellence by being a key player in day-to-day problem solving and process improvement exercises.
Understand and internalize QA/QC principles in every day functions.
Contribute to 8D production investigations as well as the characterisation of next generation battery materials.
Work across many parts of the organisation, collaborating with Production, R&D, Process engineering and Quality.
Work with external suppliers, institutes and academic organizations as well as customers.

Skills & Requirements
Education/Experience
PhD (or MSc with 5+ years of experience in a laboratory) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Natural Sciences or Engineering.
2+ years of experience in R&D, quality control or an analytical laboratory in a relevant industry, e.g. Li-ion battery materials, Inorganic materials, Pharmaceutical, Food or Paper industries.
Experience in analytical chemistry is a must.
Proven track record of performing method development and validation projects in a laboratory environment.
Project management skills.
Knowledgeable in quality management systems, e.g. ISO 9001, IATF16949, TQM as well as Lean and six sigma.
Proven track record in statistical and measurement system analysis (MSA).
Familiar with SPC, FMEA, Quality troubleshooting tools and problem-solving methodology
Must have worked in a multi-cultural environment.
Curious, technically educated and preferably with a strong business background.
Specific Skills/Abilities
Excellent English written and oral skills, Swedish is a plus.
