ESS is now looking for an Analytical Radio-Chemist for the ESS Spallation Physics Group organized within the Target Division as part of the Technical Directorate.

The ESS Spallation Physics Group has a broad range of responsibilities, which are not limited to target division, but are ESS wide.

The duties of the ESS Spallation Physics Group include, but are not limited to:


• Neutronics: Monte Carlo transport calculations and activation calculations.
• Computer tools and neutron cross-section development.
• Experimental verifications & developments.
• Study of materials of interest for the operation and upgrade of the facility.
• Interface to the neutron scattering instrument teams 

The successful candidate will be part of the ESS Spallation Physics Group, and work with a sub-team which is focused on the study of materials, which are of interest for the operation and the future upgrade of the ESS facility.

Job description

Your main areas of responsibilities as an Analytical Radio-Chemist will be to:


• Be the ESS point of contact for question regarding chemical behavior (e.g.: corrosion, ortho- and parahydrogen conversion/catalysis) of materials in a radiation environment.
• Develop and maintain the ESS materials handbook
• Support the licensing process with e.g. tritium propagation in materials assessments.
• Work on sample preparation and analysis.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:


• PhD or equivalent experience in analytical or inorganic chemistry or material science.
• Profound knowledge of chemical behavior of materials in a radiation environment.
• Knowledge of chemical process related to spallation sources.
• Be able to document information thoroughly and efficiently.
• Fluent in English, oral and written
• Being able to communicate effectively and willingly in a multicultural environment and with people from many different professions.
• Willingness to show initiative.
• Being able to develop solutions for evolving designs and requirements.
• Team player that can work independently.
• Ability to work on time critical tasks.

You should have the ability to work on complex tasks with the bigger picture always in mind. Since the position requires you to interact and coordinate with others, listen to and consult others, excellent communication skills are essential. 

Desired qualifications are:


• Knowledge of European languages other than English.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period.

Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.

Start date
The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
