Applied Physicist Expert in particle interaction modelling and Monte Carlo transport code implementation (EN-STI-BMI-2020-115-LD)
Geneva, Switzerland
Contract
Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction
The Engineering Department (EN) pushes forward the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community. Within Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI) of the EN department, you will join the Beam Machine Interactions (BMI) Section, which is responsible for the development and maintenance of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and for providing formal training and support to its users, including in particular in the accelerator community and to the experiments worldwide. The section also performs beam-machine interaction studies for all CERN accelerators, and FLUKA calculations for different applications, including conceptual
design of beam intercepting devices, new target areas, medical applications, etc.
Are you excited to join the world leading particle physics research laboratory? Then join CERN and take part!
Functions
As Physicist/Engineer in the Beam Machine Interactions Section, you will initially:
Contribute to improve and refine the atomic and nuclear physics models used in FLUKA and required for the applications to CERN Accelerator problems;
As part of the FLUKA team, assist the other members in the application of the code for the purposes of CERN accelerators, especially the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the injector chain, their future upgrade projects, and the other future CERN projects (FCC, muon collider, etc..);
Help to maintain and regularly distribute worldwide the FLUKA code;
Contribute to the development of a new code structure and interfaces with other Monte Carlo codes.
In the longer term the successful candidate is expected to:
Contribute to the organization and management of the code development at CERN as well as internationally;
Assure the functionality of the FLUKA code with respect to CERN's needs.
