Ass Professor or senior lecturer in Biointerface and Biomaterial Sc

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the research/the project/the department
The long-term vision of our division is to contribute to translational life-science research and educational activities engaging several departments at Chalmers, Gothenburg University as well as regional companies, institutes and technology transfer initiatives.

At the heart of our activities is our tradition to contribute to biointerface and biomaterial research by developing and applying surface-sensitive tools, such as quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), ellipsometry, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), nanoplasmonics as well as bioimaging using total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF SIMS).

By combining these concepts with advanced microfluidics and novel surface chemistries it is our ambition to address important needs and scientific questions identified together with biologists, chemists and medical doctors as well as life-science companies. In this way, we hope to contribute novel methodological and theoretical approaches based on a unique position at the border between applied physics, nanoscience, electrical/chemical engineering, (bio)chemistry, biology and medicine.

Major responsibilities
Strengthen the activities of the division's research and teaching activities by establishing research expertise focused on biointerface science in a broad perspective, characterized by specific activities in the areas ofliquid-based surface analytical tools, surface modifications designed to improve the function of surfaces used in bioanalytical sensor applications, biomaterial research as well as drug development and delivery, and safety aspects of emerging products based on nanotechnology inventions.

This expansion of the division's activities is timely and likely to broaden our national and international arena. It will also generate expertise knowledge in an emerging research fields, which is of highest relevance to keep up high standard training for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Your major responsibilities as associate professor or senior lecturer is to develop your own research direction in harmony with vision of the division and the department, and to be involved in teaching on undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. The position also includes supervising PhD students, taking part in leadership, administration and responsibility for laboratory safety as well as handling of chemicals. Other important aspects involve generation of funding to research as well as collaboration within academia and with society at large.

Position summary
Full-time permanent position.

Qualifications
The position of associate professor requires a doctoral degree in a relevant field as well as at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or corresponding expertise. You must have documented experience from teaching on an university level and from supervision of PhD students. A proven capacity to generate external funding to scientific research are necessary. Experience from industry/industry collaborations in the biotechnology area are considered very valuable. The position's level will primarily be determined on the basis of your scientific qualifications. The position of associate professor requires, for example, scientific expertise that is considerably higher than that required for a doctoral degree (corresponding to admission as docent).

We are looking for a person with a personal drive and with a flexible and open mind to accomplish research and education of highest international standard. You are expected to take own initiatives to new research opportunities and collaborations and scientific exchange both within the division and with relevant external actors, while at the same time being perceptive to the needs of younger co-workers and the division's activities in a broad perspective. A documented training in leadership is seen as an advantage.

The position of senior lecturer requires a doctoral degree in a relevant field as well as at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or correspondingexpertise. You must be accustomed to teaching and be a skilled educator. For this reason, we place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio. Experience from performing academic research or qualified research in industry/the public sector is also meritorious.

Regardless of the level, the position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you must be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level within two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
