Arbetsbeskrivning
We look for an excellent academic talent in the broad intersection between quantum information, mathematics and computer science. You will be given resources to start your own group at Chalmers, which can be placed either at the Department of Mathematical Sciences or the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. There will be ample opportunities to interact with the ongoing long-term effort to build a superconducting quantum computer at Chalmers as well as the companies connected to this project. You will be at the center of an exciting development, catalysing an interdisciplinary research effort between physics, mathematics and computer science. We are especially interested in candidates from Theoretical Computer Science and Mathematics.
The Quantum Computer Project and the Wallenberg Center for Quantum Technology
Our goal is to build a quantum computer and to apply it to real-world computational problems that cannot be efficiently solved on a conventional computer. Such problems can be found for example in optimisation, quantum chemistry, materials science, and machine learning. The Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, is the platform for building this 100+ qubit superconducting quantum computer and developing the most interesting quantum algorithms to run in collaboration with industry partners. We have industrial PhD projects with (among others) the companies Jeppesen, AstraZeneca and Volvo AB as well as with Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and are continuously striving to expand our collaboration with industry and the public sector. WACQT is a 12-year initiative aimed to bring Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of Quantum Technology, mainly funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation but also the participating universities and industry contribute. WACQT is committed towards promoting career development, gender equality and diversity through networking and supporting activities. With our current center with more than 150 experimental and theoretical physicists, we have a good understanding of quantum physics. The sought Assistant or Associate Professor in Quantum Software will broaden as well as deepen our understanding of the computational and mathematical aspects of quantum computation. Quantum Software is indeed a broad field. This includes but is not limited to topics such as quantum optimisation algorithms, hybrid quantum-classical algorithms, quantum machine learning, quantum error correction and fault tolerance, quantum simulation, quantum complexity, verification of quantum computation and distributed protocols of quantum computation.
What we offer to you
The position is a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor or a full-time permanent employment at the rank of Associate Professor.
The starting package includes funding for one PhD student or four postdoc years. For projects aligned with the WACQT quantum computing project, it is possible to receive WACQT funding for an additional PhD student or postdoc. Individual departments might potentially contribute further to the starting package.
At Chalmers we seek to establish a good work/life balance for our employees. We want to provide you with the means to pick the best path possible in your pursuit of making a difference. Our ambitions in this area are reflected in the generous employment conditions, including:
• holiday allowance of up to 7 weeks per year
• a collective agreement including parental pay, sick pay supplement, and medicine costs
• a wellness allowance towards activities promoting good health
• flexible working conditions
Sweden’s extensive social welfare system means, for example, that you are entitled to 390 days of paid parental leave, and education at all levels is free. Chalmers offers courses in the Swedish language. Although most of our work is in English, and English is widely spoken throughout Swedish society, developing a good knowledge of Swedish is an advantage in everyday life and in the workplace, and we offer to help you unlock this dimension of life in Sweden. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Our aim is to actively improve the gender balance and diversity in our faculty. We therefore welcome a diversity of applicants with different backgrounds and experiences. We work broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
Major responsibilities
The successful candidate will have as a main responsibility to perform and lead research in the broad field of Quantum Software with support from WACQT and contribute actively to the Quantum Computer project at Chalmers as well as other scientific activities at the department in question. The candidate will also contribute to education on all levels and supervise master students as well as doctoral students. Responsibilities include participation in departmental and university-wide undertakings as well as in national and international collaborations.
