Assistant Professor

Arbetsbeskrivning

Application deadline: 2014-03-06

The division of Water Environment Technology (WET) is a part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. WET brings together scientists with expertise in process engineering, hydraulics, environment, and sustainability. At WET, we perform research in a number of research fields, including drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater engineering, contaminated areas, and urban metabolism. More information about WET can be found at https://www.chalmers.se/cee/EN/divisions/wet. The successful candidate will become a member of the drinking water research group DRICKS at the Division of Water Environment Technology and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Major responsibilities
The primary duty of the successful candidate is to perform research together with the members of the research group DRICKS. The position also includes teaching both on undergraduate and master's levels, as well as supervising PhD students. Another important aspect involves both national and international cooperation with academia, industry and society at large.

The research will be performed within one work package of the project “Risk-based decision support for safe drinking water”. The overall aim of this project is to develop methods that provide decision support for a cost-effective and sustainable reduction of public health risks posed by the microbial contamination of drinking water systems. The aim of the work package, for which the successful candidate will be responsible, is to develop methods for predicting the influence of potential faecal contamination sources located in the catchment area of a drinking water source on microbial composition and abundance in raw water.

Position summary
This position offers full-time temporary employment for a maximum of four years. An evaluation will take place after two years. The successful candidate is expected to achieve the level of Associate Professor within four years.

Qualifications
To qualify for a position at Chalmers as assistant professor, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; the degree should generally not be older than five years. You are also expected to be accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. Experience from a postdoc position or qualified research and development in industry/the public sector is meritorious.

For this particular assistant professorship, the following requirements and merits apply:

• A doctoral degree in Drinking Water Engineering, or a closely related field, is a requirement.

• Documented knowledge of and experience with three-dimensional hydrodynamic modelling in the context of water quality are required.

• Documented knowledge of and experience with GIS-based hydrological modelling in the context of water quality are required.

• Documented knowledge of and experience with modelling the fate and transport of microbial contamination in water sources are required.

• Fluent verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English will be required after one year of employment. If Swedish is not your native language Chalmers will offer you Swedish courses.

• Experience in supervision of master’s thesis projects is required.

• Documented experience with hydrodynamic software packages is a major merit.

• Experience with quantitative microbial risk assessment of health risks for drinking water consumers is a merit.

• Experience with transdisciplinary research projects in close cooperation with external partners from industry and academia is a merit.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20140032 and written in English. The application should be sent via Chalmers website, where you also will find detailed instructions for what to include and how to do it.
