Assistant Professor as WISE fellow: Materials for clean energy

Assistant Professor as WISE fellow: Materials for clean energy

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for an assistant professor in synthesis of functional materials for clean energy that will strenghen this important area of research. Transforming the energy system is one of the keys to a sustainable future, and energy conversion and storage are key aspects in this regard. While much focus is currently placed on novel battery technologies, it is important to also consider other approaches, including but not limited to solar fuels, phase change materials, and functional materials emerging from the 2D materials community. In this position, we target candidates that master materials synthesis or materials growth techniques with a focus on functionality. The importance of the materials lies in their function, which should align with the conversion, storage and distribution of clean energy.

From a Swedish industrial perspective, there is a push to occupy a world leading position in these technologies. This requires cutting edge research on new materials but also educating the next generation of researchers and engineers. As a new assistant professor you will help us to meet the demand for research and education and directly complement and strengthen current activities at Chalmers.

The WISE program
Thanks to the support from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation, the Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability (WISE) was launched in 2022. WISE is a research program to enable sustainable technologies with impact on our society by understanding, creating, and controlling complex materials with a precision down to the single atom level. Although the production and extraction of materials are connected to environmental strain, their use is paramount in transforming our world towards a sustainable society. Functional materials are simply the most important parameter in the effort to accomplish green growth, since they form the physical components of future, greener technologies and circular economies. Read more about WISE here.

Each WISE Fellow will receive a recruitment package to cover 4 years of salary, two PhD students and two postdoc positions. The Fellow positions are tenure-track, and the universities/organizations will assume the long-term responsibility of their support as tenured faculty.

Environment
Materials science at Chalmers is a national strategic research environment anchored in a long tradition of outstanding research. We provide access to state-of-the-art instrumentation at Chalmers Materials Analysis Laboratory and the clean room facility as well as strong collaborations within national and international infrastructure networks.

With our research, education, and innovation activities, we address societal challenges and include all the important elements of advanced materials research: theory and modeling, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation. This position will most likely be placed at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, or the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) depending on the background of the candidate and the proposed research.

Major responsibilities
You will conduct research in line with the intentions described in your application. We want you to complement rather than duplicate our existing competences, and that you have an ambition to create synergies between existing research groups, at Chalmers as well as within the WISE framework.

As an Assistant Professor, you will contribute with:
- Active engagement in research, developing a distinct line of research through independent research projects.
- Active participation in education.
- Supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
- Applying for external research funding.
- Participating in joint departmental and university-wide activities.
- Seeking international collaborations on a high scientific level.
- Collaborating with research groups within and outside of Chalmers.

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who have the ambition to build a leading independent research group at the cutting edge of your research area, who can attract external funding and have a strong interest in education. You are open-minded and interested in collaborating across borders inside and outside of Chalmers, and in the WISE framework. At least one postdoc period outside the institution where you performed your PhD is required.  Interest and experience in teaching and supervision are meritorious. Teamwork, leadership, organizational and entrepreneurial skills are advantageous.

You have:
- A doctoral degree in material science, chemistry or physics, not older than 7 years prior to the application deadline of August 15, 2022.**
- Relevant postdoctoral experience.
- Demonstrated ability to perform excellent and independent research.
- Demonstrated ability to establish national and international collaborations.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.

If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

**The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions will be made for longer periods of verified leave, such as parental leave, military leave and sick leave.
