Assistant professor in biomathematics

Arbetsbeskrivning

The properties of many biological systems emerge through the interactions of its constituent components; single cell behaviour is the outcome of interactions between numerous signalling pathways, tissue growth is a result of physical and biochemical interactions between millions of cells and organismal properties are jointly controlled by several regulatory systems. The purpose of this research project is to understand how the properties of malignant brain tumour depend on the characteristics of the constituent cancer cells.

The position is located in the Division of Mathematics at Mathematical Sciences, and the selected person will work closely with the Biomathematics group, that works on various mathematical applications on biological phenomena. For example, there is theoretic work done on differential equations and their numerical applications on cell metabolism. There are also studies of evolutionary problems concerning the organisation and development of genes, game theoretic questions related to biology and sympatric speciation.

The project is funded by a grant from the Swedish Foundation of Strategic Research (20M SEK) with the overarching goal of exploring the impact of heterogeneity on biological systems with applications in cancer care, molecular biology and metabolic disease.

Major responsibilities

The primary duty of the successful candidate is to perform research together with the members of the project team. The position also includes teaching both on undergraduate and master's levels, as well as supervising PhD students. Another important aspect involves both national and international cooperation with academia, industry and society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary

Required qualifications:

• PhD in Mathematics, Mathematical Biology or closely related field; the degree should generally not be older than five years

• Documented knowledge of and experience with mathematical modelling of brain tumour growth.

• Knowledge of modeling with and analysis of partial differential equations.

• Documented experience with interdisciplinary research with cancer biologists.

• You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

Meritorious qualifications

• Experience with image analysis, large scale data analysis and with design of biological experiments are meritorius.

• Experience from a postdoc position or qualified research and development in industry/the public sector is meritorious.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
