Arbetsbeskrivning
Information about the research
You are invited to apply for an assistant professor position (Swedish: forskarassistent) in the area of computational composite material mechanics emphasized on coupled problems related to composites processing. The position is placed within the division of material and computational mechanics, which is one of six research divisions of the Department of Applied Mechanics. The department has in total approximately 180 employees, and it is one of the leading environments within mechanical and vehicle research. Our vision is to ensure sustainable technical solutions to society through applied mechanics. The six divisions conduct world-leading research, usually in close collaboration with national and international universities and industries.
In the division of material and computational mechanics, the research is focused on the mechanical modeling of structures, components and processes along with the involved materials modeling; thereby we provide mechanics based solutions and virtual solution tools to our engineering challenges. The division comprises 25 employees; 10 faculty and 15 PhD students. The research issues are channeled via our active fields: “light materials and structures”, “multiphase materials”, “process modelling and simulation” and “railway mechanics”, which within smaller research groups are formed.
We need to further expand and develop our activities across the active fields of “process modelling and simulation” and “light materials and structures”. In particular, addressing new composites and their processing technologies to be developed and industrialized for both small and large scale structures. The development entails new and complex manufacturing processes, the resulting material state with its defects and effects of these defects on the structural performance. The research issues are related to, on the one hand, the understanding of the actual manufacturing process via modeling and simulation, and, on the other hand, the process induced material and structural properties to maintain control of the quality of the composite components. At the division we are also establishing a composites manufacturing lab for fibre reinforced thermoset polymers.
You are expected to develop your research focused on composites modelling. The issues relate to the modeling and simulation of wet-out processes, consolidation and solidification, the resulting defects (e.g. residual stress state, porosity, fibre waviness, etc.), and effects of these defects in-service. In this development knowledge about multiscale technology is expected. You are also expected to take part in the development of our new composites manufacturing lab for thermoset plastic materials. An important part of the work is to take part in and to further develop outreach activities of the research, in particular, to our industrial partners: VCC, AIRBUS, GKN Aerospace Sweden AB, Saab and Swerea SICOMP. We have quite wide international research network.
Major responsibilities
• Active engagement in research.
• Active contribution to education on all levels and in continuing education.
• Teaching on all levels and in continuing education will normally comprise less than 20% of full-time duties.
• Supervision of doctoral students.
• Seek external research funding.
• Lead independent research projects.
• Should take part in joint departmental and university-wide undertakings.
• Arrange international collaboration on a high scientific level.
• Collaboration with other research groups within the areas of advance.
• Should seek to create her/his own research platform.
Position summary
The appointment as assistant professor is a four year entry level faculty position with tenure-track whereby the employee has the opportunity to acquire both pedagogical and scientific qualifications. An assistant professor is expected to improve her or his ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop abilities in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of associate professor within four years and if successful you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
Application deadline: 22 January 2017
