Assistant professor in computer science

Arbetsbeskrivning

Assistant professor in Computer Science with a focus on Model-based Real-time Communication Architectures

A full-time employment for three years from January 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is funded by the AstaMoCA project, which is a joint project between Halmstad University, the AstaZero safety testing facility, and Volvo Truck Group. The project is funded by the Swedish Knowledge Foundation (KKS).

Research focus
AstaZero is the world’s first, full-scale test facility for future generation road safety, and is a collaboration between several Swedish industrial and academic partners. The operations and performance of the facility depend critically on a networking and communication infrastructure that connects the different subsystems involved in a test. This project is a focused activity aimed at developing this infrastructure in a rigorous and systematic manner. The activity is a close collaboration between Halmstad University, AstaZero, and Volvo Truck Group. Halmstad University will support an assistant professor and part of the time of three professors. Matching industrial in-kind support from AstaZero and Volvo Truck Group supports project leaders and technicians, as well as access to the necessary equipment and facilities. Halmstad will focus on the specification, analysis, and selection of off-the-shelf components. AstaZero will provide access to the facility and expertise in infrastructure-side communication, as well as in the operations and use of the environment. Volvo will provide access to vehicles and expertise in vehicle-side communication and the specifics of the content being communicated. Deliverables will include specifications and analysis of nodes, communication links, specifications and analysis of the architecture, and selection of concrete implementations and concrete protocols for AstaZero, as well as certification of conformance for implementations with respect to the specifications. Around the midterm of the project, a physical test will be carried out to verify the result of the project on representative sub-systems of the environment. By the end of the project the team will complete the design, analysis, implementation, and testing for the communication architecture of a significant test scenario.

Principal duties
The selected candidate will be performing research in a very vigorous and international research environment at the School of Information Technology (ITE) at Halmstad University. The research project will be carried out in collaboration with leading industrial and academic research groups.

As an assistant professor you are expected to take primary responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the project, and to be active in the research and that you participate in teaching, both on undergraduate and graduate levels. The teaching load will be about 20% of the time (up to two courses in a year). Research activities will include building and testing rigorous modeling and simulation tools and applying these tools to the design and evaluation of communication architectures. This will involving the development of high quality software engineering artifacts for reasoning about set-based and distribution based uncertainty in communication systems. In addition, we expect you to take an active part in the continued development of the school of computing and that you work to develop your own independent and externally funded research program.

The post as assistant professor (biträdande lektor) is a qualifying appointment with the purpose to give the employee a possibility to develop its independence as researcher and to obtain merits that can lead to a competence for another post with higher eligibility requirements (according to Higher education ordinance, 4 chapter 12a §). An assistant professor shall mainly be engaged in research, but teaching can also be a part of the assignments. The post can be renewed up to a maximum of four years. After the four years an assistant professor may be promoted to a post with conditional tenure as associate professor (universitetslektor). To qualify for this promotion, the assistant professor must have done independent research; taken part in the supervision of doctoral students, and through participation in and development of the education has reached competence up to a docent’s level.

Qualification
The position is intended for someone with a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, or closely related fields. Desirable skills include expertise in software engineering, probability and statistics, communication theory, and control theory. The research track record should demonstrate excellence in research in one of the above-mentioned areas. For the assistant professor position, a track record of teaching or tutoring is required.

Salary
Salary is to be settled by negotiation. The application should include a statement of the salary level required by the candidate.

Application
Application via Halmstad Universitys recruitment system (see links on this page). Last day for application 2016-12-31.

The application package shall consist of:

1 ) a cover letter stating the purpose of the application and a brief statement of why you believe that your goals are well-matched with the goals of this position, together with a description of future research plans

2) an attested CV that includes at least

- a list of previous degrees, dates, and institution, transcripts for higher-education studies until most recent available
- a complete list of publications and a description of previous research and other work experience and links to online copies of the most important publications
