Arbetsbeskrivning
The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences seeks applicants for a position as Assistant Professor in Dynamics and Control of Mechanical Systems. Your research interests should fall within the broad range of topics from theoretical modeling to advanced applied engineering problems in cooperation with industry. There are numerous of opportunities for collaboration with other researchers and research groups at Chalmers as well as with several possible industrial partners in the region. Alongside your research program, you are expected to actively take part in and develop teaching activities within the department.
Information about the division
The Division of Dynamics has ten faculty members and ten PhD students and has its research activities organized through four research groups: Mechanical systems, Structural dynamics, Wave propagation and Railway mechanics. The research at the Division of Dynamics is mainly focused on a variety of solid dynamics problems, such as vibrational problems, fatigue, wear, contact mechanics, wave propagation, optimization and dynamics of smart material. The teaching activities of the Division of Dynamics are very broad, from several courses at the bachelor level on mechanics and solid mechanics to masters' level courses such as finite element methods, rigid body dynamics, structural dynamics, fatigue and fracture mechanics.
Research field
There are plenty of research opportunities within the area of Dynamics and Control of Mechanical Systems; from fundamental modeling and development of algorithms to the study of applied engineering problems in cooperation with industry. These could include control and reliability of mechanical systems, mechatronics, computational kinematics, multibody dynamics, nonlinear vibrations, or modeling of active smart material structures. Possible application areas may be within sustainable energy (wind, water, wave) and transportation systems (road, rail, marine and aircraft industries), but other areas such as flexible manufacturing and robotics, biomechanics, micromachines and artificial intelligent systems are also welcome.
Major responsibilities
As an Assistant Professor you are expected to take an active part in the advancement of the research and teaching activities related to the area of Dynamics and Control of Mechanical Systems. Primary responsibilities for this position include:
• Develop research within the relevant field in cooperation with academy and industry
• Participate in and develop teaching on bachelor and master's levels within the solid mechanics field
• Attract funding from industrial partners and research agencies
• Contribute to research centers at Chalmers, e.g., the six Areas of Advance
• Take an active part in contributing to a well-functioning academic environment and collegial activities at the department
• Contribute to fulfilling the department's goals on outreach activities together with current and future partners, within Sweden and internationally
Contract terms
The appointment as Assistant Professor is a four-year, entry-level, faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications. An Assistant Professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop their skills in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate Professor within four years and, if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.
Qualifications
As an Assistant Professor you need to have a full range of qualifications, experience and abilities in order to fulfil the primary responsibilities of the position. These include but are not limited to:
• Doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, e.g., applied physics , not older than 7 years prior to the application deadline of October 31, 2022.**
• Performed high quality scientific research as evidenced by publication records. The ability to achieve results through cooperation with other researchers, both locally and globally, is of particular importance for this position.
• Capability as Assistant Professor to attract funding and lead projects with various partners; both within academia and with industry.
• Shown an interest for education, for example through your own educational material, teaching experience, completed education in higher education pedagogics, or through course evaluations.
For all Assistant Professors at Chalmers
For a description of the academic level for the position of Assistant professor, please consult our Appointment regulations, section 6.4. Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, by Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee, and by external expert evaluators.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, we would like you to be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after a few years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
**The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions will be made for longer periods of verified leave, such as parental leave, military leave and sick leave.
