Information about the division of GeoEngineering
The division of GeoEngineering is one of six divisions within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and consists of three overlapping research groups: Geomechanics & Geotechnical Engineering, Hydrogeology & Rock Engineering and Risk Management of Land & Water Resources.
In Geomechanics & Geotechnical Engineering the main research focus is soil modelling and its applications in engineering practice, lead by Prof. Minna Karstunen. Examples of the latter are analyses of slope stability, construction of infrastructure such as embankments and tunnels, and foundation engineering. The research has strong links with major infrastructure projects in Scandinavia. Through the recent staff appointments, the group is well on its way to fulfil its ambition to become an internationally leading group in Soft Soil Engineering, by combining the state-of-the-art in experimental testing and modelling with field application.
Chalmers has unique climate-controlled laboratory facilities for soft soil testing and in house prototype development, and computational facilities incorporating the latest developments for computational work. The latter are undergoing further upgrades and development as part of 3MSEK strategic investment in 2014.
Major responsibilities
As assistant professor in Geotechnical Engineering, you are expected to contribute to teaching and development of the educational portfolio, with focus on the undergraduate education (which is delivered in Swedish). In parallel, you are expected to conduct research, both independently and as part of a team, on geotechnical issues associated with construction on soft soils. The successful applicant is also expected to be able to contribute in the forthcoming strategic development of laboratory facilities at Chalmers, as well as offer an interface between academia and industry. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Position summary
The Division of GeoEngineering is looking for an assistant professor in Geotechnical Engineering, with focus on soft soil testing and modelling, to start as soon as possible. The position is a full-time temporary employment for a maximum of four years. Progress will be assessed after two years. You are expected to achieve associate professor expertise within four years. Given you fulfil the individual performance criteria for an associate professorship within four years, the department intends to support your internal recruitment to a tenured position.
Qualifications
At Chalmers, the non-tenured position as assistant professor requires a doctoral degree in a relevant field; the degree should generally not be older than five years. You are also expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. Experience from a postdoc position or qualified research and development in industry/the public sector is meritorious.
For this particular assistant professorship, the successful applicant should have an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or a related topic, and a PhD degree in geotechnical area. Furthermore, the applicant is expected have both industry and research experience on geotechnical issues associated with construction on soft soils, with the ability to contribute to design and development of novel experimental devices, constitutive model development and implementation, as well as practical application.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20140050 and written in English. The application should be sent via Chalmers website, where you also will find detailed instructions for what to include and how to do it.
