Assistant Professor in in OTA-based antenna design for MIMO applications

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the research/the project/the department
The wireless communications has grown to become the most common way of relating to other humans, both in professional and private life. Soon all kinds of devices will be connected with wireless systems, we talk about internet of things. This commercial growth of the antenna systems technology has created the need for new technologies for testing antenna systems and for extending the antenna technologies to higher frequencies. The position is located in the Division of Antenna Systems (referred to as the antenna group) headed by Professor Per-Simon Kildal, at Department of Signals and Systems (S2) at Chalmers. The group consists today of 14 persons of international backgrounds. The group is central in the VINNOVA funded Antenna Systems VINN Excellence center Chase. It has one of the largest publication records at Chalmers, and is one of the world´s most recognized research groups within the antenna systems area. There are several successful commercializations from the research activity, including the so-called hat antenna, which has been produced in nearly 1 million copies for Ericsson´s MINI-LINK, and the world-leading spinoff company Bluetest AB.

Professor Kildal has since 1999 developed his own approach for testing of wireless devices like smart phones. This has now been successfully commercialized in Bluetest AB as Over-The-Air (OTA) reverberation test systems. The reverberation test systems emulates rich isotropic multipath (RIMP). This is now extended and complemented by characterization in random Line-Of-Sight to systematically cover also the random effects of the user and new applications related to automotive, machine-to-machine (M2M) and micro base stations. This approach represents a complete rethinking of the wireless channel and is in particular useful for wireless systems making use of MIMO multiport antenna and OFDM technologies. The user effects are explored in collaboration with Telenor AS within the Chase research center. The research area includes collaborations with researchers at the communication systems division at S2. Professor Kildal has now received 3.7 Mkr from VINNOVA for “Rethinking the Wireless Channel” in collaboration with Huawei Technologies Sweden AB and Bluetest AB. The project aim is to develop Swedish-owned hardware innovations that have been optimized for both RIMP and random-LOS.

Major responsibilities
Professor Kildal wants here an assistant professor who can realize the goals of the VINNOVA grant and with the ambition to develop his own career within the OTA area. The holder of the position is supposed to perform own research, write scientific papers and research applications, and supervise existing and new PhD students, as well as to maintain and further develop the groups international network and collaborations within Chalmers and internationally, within the framework of existing research funding and related areas where there may be opportunities for more funding. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector. The holder of the position is also supposed to contribute to the teaching at all levels of education at Chalmers, if required. The teaching also includes arranging graduate courses within the antenna group´s research areas. Assistant Professor is a position that offers an opportunity to qualify for higher research positions, both in academia and in society at large.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment for a maximum of four years. Progress will be assessed after two years. You are expected to achieve associate professor expertise within four years.

Qualifications
The applicant must have a proper background within the OTA area, and must have the ambition to write own research applications and develop his/her own research career within the OTA area. The doctoral degree should generally not be older than five years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. Experience from a postdoc position or qualified research and development in industry/the public sector is meritorious. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should learn Swedish good enough to teach on undergraduate level in order to later qualify for higher academic position afterwards. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Application deadline: 2014-03-31
