Assistant Professor in Logistics and Freight Transport

Assistant Professor in Logistics and Freight Transport

Arbetsbeskrivning

Are you passionate about creating novel solutions for sustainable, connected and resource-efficient logistics and freight transport of the future? The Division of Service Management & Logistics at Chalmers is seeking candidates for a tenure track Assistant Professor position who are interested in pursuing strong and internationally leading research related to logistics and freight transport in the wider context of the supply chain.

Information about the division and the research
We offer you the chance to join a well-established research environment with a strong and appealing teaching portfolio. Our research focuses on the management, design, delivery, and improvement of processes and services from the perspective of the individual organization as well as the wider supply chain. We conduct problem-oriented, empirical, and inter-disciplinary research, with strong emphasis on industry and societal relevance, and attach value to high visibility in leading academic journals. Teaching and supervision at all levels (BSc, MSc, PhD, executive) are important tasks, and are clearly embedded in research and practical relevance. Our research is supported by strong in-house networks within the department and the Chalmers Areas of Advance, where we have a central role in both Transport and Production. Collaboration with companies and external stakeholders is leveraged through, for example, the Northern Lead logistics competence centre. The division has a particular research focus on organizations within sectors such as transportation, construction, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Our work in freight transport, logistics and supply chain management is anchored in a long tradition of outstanding research and teaching. A broad perspective of technology (emphasizing e.g. connectivity and automation) and new ways of organizing and managing are seen as enablers for improved resource efficiency within and across various modes of freight transport. A key strength is the broad spectrum of research topics engaging both providers and customers of logistics services throughout the supply chain. Another distinct feature of our research is close collaboration with industry to ensure relevance and impact. Here, we draw upon an in-depth expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. In combination, this breadth of research offers a range of opportunities for you to establish and develop your academic career in freight transport and logistics.

We now seek to recruit an Assistant Professor with a keen interest in research problems related to freight transport and logistics in the supply chain, who can provide new and effective approaches to challenges faced by industry and society in general. Examples of such challenges include net-zero emissions, circularity, data driven solutions, automation, and analytics, to name a few. We seek a candidate who strives to use theoretical principles to create new practice or improve current practice.

Major responsibilities
You will contribute with:
- Active engagement in developing and delivering a distinct line of research
- Active contribution to education on all levels, including supervision of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students
- Raising external research funds
- Taking part in joint departmental and university-wide tasks
- National and international collaboration with industry, colleagues and other stakeholders

The position involves conducting empirical research of high international quality in the logistics and freight transport networks and its key actors. This requires good experience from working with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods and management of relationships with stakeholders.

The appointment as Assistant Professor is a four-year entry level tenure track faculty position. Each new assistant professor at Chalmers is a strategic recruitment. Assistant professors are expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop abilities in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. One assessment will be conducted after two years, and an additional assessment for granting tenure will be conducted in conjunction with the period of appointment reaching its conclusion. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate Professor within four years and if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.

Qualifications
We strongly encourage applicants with a research profile that complements our expertise in logistics and freight transport within the division. We are looking for candidates who are interested in becoming a part of and further developing our research environment, can attract external funding, and make a significant impact with our key stakeholders. You are open-minded with a genuine interest in both research and education and with an aptitude to collaborate nationally and internationally.

You have:
• A doctoral degree in a relevant field (freight transport and logistics or related fields, such as supply chain management, operations management, or service management) not older than 7 years prior to the application deadline of 20 March 2022.
• A broad competence within the subject area of the post, good understanding of logistics and freight sector challenges.
• Conducted research at the highest level, demonstrated by e.g. publications in leading journals relevant to the field, presentations at leading conferences.
• Shown your ability to create a national and international network, for example through co-authoring.
• Experience of applying for research funding. The ability to have research funding granted is meritorious.
• Shown an interest in, and potential for, teaching and pedagogy, for example through prior teaching experience, development of teaching material, completed education in higher education pedagogy, or through course evaluations.
• Post-doctoral or equivalent stay at an institution other than the one where your PhD was awarded.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in English. Swedish is meritorious.
