Assistant Professor in Machine Elements and Minerals Processing

Arbetsbeskrivning

The research conducted by the Machine Element group is directed towards machine elements, product development and equipment and processes for rock material processing. Within Chalmers strategic Area of Advance Production the Machine Element group is responsible for the active field called Chalmers Rock Processing Systems. The research group is working on the fundamental understanding and modelling of different types of mechanical machines and processes used in aggregates, ore and minerals processing.
The results generated are continuously implemented in the industry and the potential is therefore considerable. The research team has for the past 15 years developed modeling and simulation capability from purely empirical models to parametric models based on fundamental physical relationships. The method and models have been adopted by several other research groups and is on track to become the new industry standard.
The Machine Elements group consists of four seniors, one professor, one associate professor, one lecturer and one researcher. The group has in recent years had an average of 4-5 PhD students and one research engineer. The research group has an extensive undergraduate education mission and is responsible for several major mandatory courses and is also involved in a number of courses at the master and bachelor programmes.

Major responsibilities
The assistant professor will be responsible for research and development of methods to replace steady-state simulations with time-dynamic simulations for applications in aggregates, minerals and mining industries. This creates a great potential for improvement in a number of different application areas. The opportunity for industrial cooperation is very good and potential financiers are found both nationally and internationally. Packaging of the results will also mean new opportunities for product development.
The position also includes teaching in the undergraduate courses that the research group is responsible for. Management of research projects together with supervison of graduate students is also included. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.

Position summary
The appointment as assistant professor is a four-year entry-level faculty position with tenure track, whereby the employee has the opportunity to acquire both pedagogical and scientific qualifications. An assistant professor is expected to improve her or his ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop abilities in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of associate professor within four years and if successful you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.

Qualifications
To qualify as a candidate for the position you must have a PhD degree in the field of mechanical engineering, process optimization or related disciplines and you must have a solid theoretical background in mathematics, mechanics, engineering, control and programming. The degree should generally not be older than seven years. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical skills are needed. The candidate must have experience of model development in, e.g., MATLAB Simulink and of organizing and performing simulations. Experience from full-scale mineral processing plants, comprising simulation, processing and analysis of data, validation and implementation is required for the position. Knowledge in product development, machine elements, engineering design and optimization techniques is a merit.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. Experience from a postdoc position or qualified research and development in industry/the public sector is meritorious. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
