Information about the research/the project/the department
The Division of Electrical Power Engineering within the Department of Energy and Environment at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a faculty position as Assistant Professor.
The research within the Department of Energy and Environment covers a wide field within the areas energy and environment/sustainable development, from a global perspective to industrial, building, and product scale. The research fields include energy technology and energy conversion, conducted both experimentally and theoretically, and development, use and evaluation of methods and tools for analysis of technical systems, regarding environment/sustainable development and energy. In total some 220 persons are working in six divisions at the department.
The Electrical Power Engineering division conducts research and education within the electric power engineering area with a focus on applications for renewable energy systems and cooperates with the High Voltage Engineering division, which conducts research on High voltage applications with
a focus on materials and electrical fields.
The Electrical Power Engineering division is conducting research on dc-based systems for offshore wind turbine installations. The main sponsor is the Swedish Energy Agency. The project deals with the study of transients in collection radials in off-shore wind turbine installations as well as in high frequency transformers to be used in these collection grids, also the design of transformers for isolated dc/dc converter applications are conducted. Tightly connected, three Ph.D projects dealing with a) design of a generating system suitable for a dc-based wind park, b) a multi MW dc/dc-converter utilizing a high-frequency magnetic core and c) Design, operation and maintenance planning of an HVDC transmission system is included in this activity.
This project is a part of Chalmers research in the Energy Area of Advance.
Major responsibilities
The selected candidate will act as a research leader in this project and thus in close cooperation with the three Ph.D students conduct research on the offshore-HVDC wind system as well as participating in the supervision of the three Ph.D students. It is accordingly a prerequisite with good cooperation ability. Moreover, the candidate will take the leading role in the transformer design project and cooperate with Ph.D students at another university. The position holder is at the same time expected to participate in the education program at the Division of the same area, supervise Ph.D. students and MSc. thesis students. The share in the working time for education and research will be around 80% for research and 20% for education. Assistant Professor is a position that offers an opportunity to qualify for higher research positions, both in academia and in society at large. The appointment is for two + two years of full-time employment. An assistant professor is expected to reach the Swedish docent level (in Swedish "oavlönad docent") within four years. After two years the progress is assessed.
Qualifications
The applicant should have a PhD degree in electric power engineering. A Ph.D in a related discipline and experience equivalent to a Ph.D in the above mentioned subjects, are also welcome to apply. The candidate should preferably:
• Have experience from conducting HV experiments
• Ability to design test circuits for experiments incorporating high-frequency phenomena.
• Experience in simulation and analysis of transient phenomena of local grids ( for example wind turbine collection grids)
• Experience of industrial collaboration
• Experience from international working groups
• Skills in modeling electrotechnical components for high bandwidth requirements
• Pedagogic experience, preferably as lecturer in a power engineering advanced course
• Good cooperation ability
Applicants are expected to have an excellent knowledge of both written and spoken English. Since the group’s teaching activities are conducted in both Swedish and English, oral and writing ability in Swedish is an important advantage.
You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. Experience from a postdoc position or qualified research and development in industry/the public sector is meritorious.
Application deadline: 2014-03-12
