Assistant Professor in Space technology

Assistant Professor in Space technology

Arbetsbeskrivning

The world requires outstanding technical universities to address the multifaceted global challenges that we face today. Chalmers University of Technology is on an ambitious path to expand the frontiers of science and technology to meet those challenges.

As part of our ambitions, Chalmers seeks curious and creative individuals to join us as tenure-track Assistant Professors. We are looking for candidates with innovative research ideas who seek scientific freedom to pursue their aspirations.

A four-year tenure track position is provided with a generous start-up package, relocation support, mentoring, and leadership training to further your development as research leader and teacher. Through our cross-departmental Areas of Advance, you will have the opportunity to find collaborations and grow networks both within the university and with our industrial and societal partners.

You are invited to apply and share your research vision and plans to achieve your goals. At Chalmers, we are committed to improve diversity in our faculty, and encourage applications from individuals of all genders, backgrounds, and identities.

The applications will be reviewed during March – June, and interviews are planned for August – September 2024. Starting date is flexible but preferably not later than the first half of 2025.

Space technology: for global perspectives and solutions
Space is becoming a scene for fast scientific, technological, and industrial development. Presently, the space industry is transitioning from a limited number of actors and funding agencies to the era of ‘new space’, characterized by a more diverse landscape with new possibilities in both public and commercial sectors.

The swift development also poses challenges, necessitating a commitment to using space itself sustainably. We are already witnessing a wide variety of endeavors aiming to explore our cosmic neighborhood, broaden the sensing of the Universe, link continents by providing vital access to information across the planet, and take a more systemic and multifaceted look at the climate globally. As a result, an increasing number of services crucial to our society rely on space technology. There is also a growing realization that as we reach out into space we must understand the impact of extreme environments on biological systems, materials, and construction. The expansion will affect our societies and international collaborations in new ways.

The Gothenburg region is actively engaged in space technology, and approximately two-thirds of Sweden’s employees in the space sector are located in the region. Close collaboration between academia, the public sector, and a diverse range of space companies leads to multidisciplinary opportunities and innovation. Chalmers has a key role in this cluster with our strong research, education, and as host of the national facility Onsala Space Observatory (Onsala Space Observatory | Chalmers) which serves as the contact point to European and international radio astronomy and space geodesy facilities.

Space technology at Chalmers encompasses both the upstream sector, providing and maintaining infrastructure in space, and the downstream sector, utilizing the space segment for various applications.  We have been deeply involved in national (Odin and MATS) and European (Herschel, JUICE, BIOMASS, ICI and Arctic Weather Satellite) astronomy, planetary and Earth observation satellite missions, in a broad spectrum from providing vital sensing components to data analysis. Our key research directions also include space-based computing, materials for space, aerospace propulsion and antenna design. Furthermore, we are active in potential future development areas for new space, including life sciences and construction. Our researchers have access to high-quality infrastructure resources such as the microwave and THz characterization at Kollberg Laboratory (Kollberg laboratory | Chalmers) and the nanofabrication facilities of Myfab Chalmers (Myfab Chalmers | Chalmers).
