Assistant professor - Urban metabolism

Arbetsbeskrivning

Application deadline: 2014-06-01

The Division of Water Environment Technology (WET) is a part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Chalmers University of Technology. WET brings together scientists with expertise in process engineering, hydraulics, environment, and sustainability. At WET, we perform research in a number of research fields, including drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater engineering, contaminated areas, and urban metabolism. More information about WET can be found at https://www.chalmers.se/cee/EN/divisions/wet. The successful candidate will become a member of the urban metabolism research group at the Division of Water Environment Technology and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Major responsibilities
The primary duty of the successful candidate is to perform research together with the members of the urban metabolism research group. The position also includes teaching both at the undergraduate and Master's levels, as well as supervising PhD students. Another important aspect involves both national and international cooperation with academia, industry and society at large.

The research will be performed within several work packages of the EU Climate KIC “Smart Sustainable Districts” Flagship. The overall aim of the Flagship is to co-develop and demonstrate how new thinking, coupled with effective tools, technologies and policies, can lead to factor 4 improvement in city district performance across a range of sustainability measures.
The objectives of the work packages, for which the successful candidate will be responsible, are to:

• study physical elements and develop tools and methods for city systems with focus on materials

• integrate the developed tools with models on other city sectors such as energy and transport

In particular, the candidate will be responsible to apply urban metabolism methods to provide decision support for a sustainable reduction of resource consumption at the district level through adoption of the urban material flow analysis (MFA) method to lower spatial scale resolution.

Position summary
This position offers full-time temporary employment for a maximum of four years. An evaluation will take place after two years. The successful candidate is expected to achieve the level of Associate professor within four years from the start of the employment.
