Assistant Professor with tenure track in Quantum Software

Assistant Professor with tenure track in Quantum Software

Arbetsbeskrivning

Building a superconducting computer and using it for real world problems

Our goal is to build a quantum computer and to apply it to real-world computational problems that cannot be efficiently solved on a conventional computer. Such problems can be found for example in optimization, quantum chemistry, materials science, and machine learning.

The Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, is the platform for building this 100+ qubit superconducting quantum computer and constructing the most interesting quantum algorithms to run in collaboration with industry partners. We have industrial PhD projects with the companies Jeppesen, AstraZeneca and Volvo AB as well as with Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and are continuously striving to expand our collaboration with industry and the public sector.

With our current group of more than 50 experimental and theoretical physicists, we have a good understanding of quantum physics. The sought tenure track assistant professor in Quantum Software will broaden as well as deepen our understanding of computational complexity and the classes of problems that will benefit from quantum algorithms to speed up the computations. Quantum Software is indeed a broad field, as indicated by the topics and speakers in our recent workshop in Quantum Software and optimisation.

The successful candidate will pursue academic excellence in one or several of the following topics: Quantum optimization algorithms, hybrid Quantum-classical algorithms, Quantum machine learning, Quantum error correction and fault tolerance, Quantum simulation, Quantum complexity. They are expected to build a new research group covering their specific research interests either at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering or at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and to have close contact with the researchers at WACQT.

About the Wallenberg Center for Quantum Technology
The Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) is a 12-year initiative aimed to bring Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of Quantum Technology (QT). The four pillars of QT are: Quantum Computing, Quantum Simulation, Quantum Communication, and Quantum Sensing. The centre is mainly funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundations but even the participating universities and industry contribute in different ways. At Chalmers, the focus is on building a superconducting quantum computer and/ or simulator and on exploring different applications of quantum computing and/ or simulation. The WACQT project is committed towards promoting career development, gender equality and diversity through networking and supporting activities.

About the position
The appointment as Assistant Professor is a four-year entry-level faculty position with tenure-track, whereby the employee has the opportunity to acquire both pedagogical and scientific qualifications. An Assistant Professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop abilities in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate Professor within four years and if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.

One assessment will be conducted after two years, and an additional assessment will be conducted towards the end of the period of appointment. More information here.

Major responsibilities
The Assistant professor will perform and lead research in Quantum Software with support from WACQT, contribute actively to the Quantum Computer project at Chalmers and attract additional funding nationally and from the EU. The Assistant professor will also contribute to education on all levels and supervise master students as well as co-supervise doctoral students. Responsibilities include participation in departmental and university-wide undertakings as well as in national and international collaborations.

Our offer to you
The starting package includes funding for one PhD student or postdoc. For projects fully aligned with the WACQT quantum computing project, it is possible to receive WACQT funding for an additional PhD student or postdoc.
