Arbetsbeskrivning
Assistant Professor in Polymeric Composite Materials
The Div of Polymer Engineering at Dept of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering has been performing world-class research on composite materials for 17 years. The division with its four professors has extended collaboration with leading composite centers around the globe at universities, research institutes as well as industry dealing with high tech applications in aerospace, marine and wind generator industries.
Numerous young researchers have successfully obtained their PhD degree and defended Master theses in Polymer Composite Materials and every year a large number of international exchange students are working in research projects. The increasingly large amount of fundamental research projects with many involved students requires an increasing effort in supervising and organizing research.
To face the challenging research problems and to improve the efficiency of the research organization, consisting today of experienced professors and PhD students, the division has to be complemented with a young, talented and ambitious researcher with PhD who would strengthen the quality of the research pyramid.
Polymeric Composite Materials is an area of research that in interaction with other closely related areas constitutes the basis for production and determination of the function of advanced polymer-based composite materials and structural components of today and tomorrow. It studies mechanisms and identifies parameters at nano, micro and meso level that control the behaviour of the composites, and describes them in mathematical terms with models that are used in the optimisation of the composites' performance. Experimental, analytical and numerical methods are used.
Subject Area
The subject involves studying and describing the relation between the manufacture, microstructure, properties and functions of composites.
Research Area
The Assistant Professor will perform research on damage development in fibre reinforced composites during the service life where the loads are mainly cyclic mechanical and thermal. Due to the hierarchical composite morphology, studies will be on several length and time scales with a wide application of advanced material characterization techniques and numerical as well as analytical simulation of nonlinear problems on each of them. The person will work in a close collaboration with senior researchers at the div and take part in supervision of two PhD students and several master students. In his responsibility will be collaboration on the subject with Swerea- SICOMP and Swedish industry, formulating projects and research proposals. In order to disseminate the accumulated state of the art knowledge she/he will publish and present the results and will teach and supervise projects in " Aerospace materials" and "Material Modelling" courses.
Formal requirements
To be eligible for employment as assistant professor the candidate must have a complete PhD, or some other title that is judged to be equivalent. The position is mainly intended for researchers that have completed their PhD not more than five years before the application deadline.
Selection criteria
The selection will be based on the scientific qualification. A very good knowledge of English (written and spoken) is required to work in the international environment of the team. Recorded ability to work with composites: manufacturing techniques, experimental characterization, numerical modelling using ANSYS.
