Arbetsbeskrivning
Northvolt has an exciting job offer for a junior Binder/Conductive engineer to join our stellar/bold/passionate team in Västeras.
In joining us you will play an important part from the very start in building one of the first large scale European battery factories. Northvolt will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society.
As a junior binder/conductive engineer, you will work around Li-ion battery cells with the focus on variety of polymer and conductive materials.
Evaluation and Analysis related works will be carried out toward the final goal of successful materials incorporation in commercial and R&D cell projects. The works will be carried out with the consultation of senior engineers.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Binder/Conductive materials evaluation in its physico-chemical aspects including rheology, DSC/TGA, electrical resistivity in collaboration with QC lab.
· Basic Slurry mixing and evaluation: acquiring basic mixing information on cathode anode binders/conductive for successful anode and cathode coating
· Basic electrode fabrication and evaluation such as electrolyte soaking, spring back and adhesion test.
· Basic cell fabrication and evaluation: especially coin cell fabrication and evaluation will be essential. Data summary should be followed up and summarized by binder/conductive engineers.
· Electro-chemical tests including swelling, EIS, Li plating, rate capability, cyclability, high temperature and low temperature characteristics: Even though some part of the evaluation can be outsourced, data organization and analysis will be very important part since it will give a clue to selection of material and also direction of improvement.
You will be assigned to a specific battery cell projects to follow-up the specific needs of the cell development around the binder/conductive materials. – The ultimate activities goal is its successful incorporation into a cell/Electrode.
Communication and follow-up with binder/conductive material’s supplier and new developers will be also important part of the job: While we will try to do more internal evaluation, utilizing suppliers’ data and test resources will be also important in evaluation and selecting good candidates.

Tasks:
Associate Material engineer
Binder/Conductive team task list:
1. We perform material screening to select candidates for electrode design for different projects.
2. Material DoEs are performed to choose materials based on cathode and anode materials and project requirements.
3. We perform the electrode composition selection and run the recipe optimisation together with the electrode team at R&D to suggest the recipe for production at higher scale (Labs or Ett).
4. To check the electrochemical performance of different material combinations, we perform coin cell/pouch cell tests.
5. Continuously, we hold the discussions with material suppliers in order to follow up on latest technical details, define material specifications and improve material's quality.
6. Material, slurry and electrode properties (physical, chemical, mechanical) are investigated during the material screening stage and during the material implementation in the projects.
7. During the project we carry out a lot of experiments (DOE) to optimise the design in order to improve performance, cost, processability
