The arena

Discovery Science is a global function within Innovative Medicines, IM, in AstraZeneca. Discovery Science supports innovative medicine project teams from multifunctional capability centers in Alderley Park, Boston and Mölndal. Discovery Sciences is mainly involved in early lead generation through the late Lead optimization stage of drug discovery. It is composed of several capabilities where Reagent and Assay Development (RAD) is one among several others such as Screening Sciences and Structure & Biophysics. This position will be placed in the RAD Department where we focus on delivering different types of reagents and assays with high impact into the drug development.

The role

To devise, champion and develop scientific areas, aligned with project needs. Will be an authority in a particular scientific area, and lead this from a lab-based perspective to make significant contributions to the practical delivery of project goals. The Associate Principal Scientist coaches and supports more junior scientists by advising and challenging them, but also by providing expert advice and interpretation of complex data. Provides disciplinary scientific leadership and represents the department at interdisciplinary meetings internally as well as externally. Makes a significant contribution to the practical delivery of projects in accordance with SHE requirements and in compliance with all AZ Corporate responsibility policies.

The following skills are highly desirable:
Expertise in assay design in general both cellular as well as biochemical assays
Excellent theoretical understanding of assay design relevant to the pharmacology
Expertise in assay optimisation, including statistical tools such as factorial experimental design, to enable generation of robust, reproducible and sensitive assays
Thorough knowledge of cell-based assay technology platforms and ability to troubleshoot
Expertise of detection technologies, including spectroscopic (e.g. absorbance, fluorescence modalities), luminescent and label-free detection
Thorough understanding of data analysis and conversion of screening data to biological parameters
Strong experience in Lead Generation
Extensive experience in the functional characterization of cells
Extensive experience of drug discovery and assay deliverables in an industrial setting
Theoretical understanding of assay design relevant to the pharmacology
Experience in mode of action studies ......
