Cardiovascular Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca which deliver candidate drugs into clinical development. CVRM Bioscience Metabolism department has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We are a team of professionals who are passionate about advancing science, to discover and develop novel therapeutics that will benefit patients suffering from diabetes, obesity, NASH, cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease.
The position is placed within the CVRM Bioscience Metabolism in vitro Team at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.
What you'll do
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Associate Principal Scientist (APS) to lead our global drug projects and make a direct impact on the drug discovery process. The ideal candidate will bring a combination of theoretical and practical expertise and demonstrate a passion for driving scientific research and teamwork.
This cross-functional role requires a hands-on approach, creativity, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills. The successful APS will be able to manage multiple projects and tasks in line with the goals of the department, working as part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing research and bringing new treatments to patients with cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Working as an Associate Principal Scientist, you will drive the effort to discover and validate new targets and serve as the bioscience lead for pipeline projects. Your preclinical research will shed light on the biology of the targets, supporting the development of both small, large molecule (i.e. peptide, antibodies) and new modality drugs (i.e. siRNA, ASO, PROTAC etc.)
To fully understand the potential of these findings in the clinical setting, you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including representatives from Discovery Sciences, Translational Medicine, DMPK, and Safety. As a highly organized and self-motivated individual with a strong scientific background, you will play a critical role in delivering project goals by staying hands-on in the laboratory and providing expert advice, interpreting complex data, making high-level recommendations, and serving as a resource for others by sharing your expertise and facilitating communication between teams.
Essential for the role

Ph.D. with >5 years of research experience in an area relevant to Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic disease
*
Strong scientific background in metabolic disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and/or NASH related comorbidities and/or complications
*
Highly developed problem solving and risk management skills, not limited to own area of expertise
*
Ability to drive, manage, run experiments, and deliver results for complex multi-functional projects
*
Excellent communication and presentation skills to report data in a clear and concise manner, with a clear understanding of implications within the overall context of drug discovery
*
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills together with evidence of delivery in a team-oriented environment
*
Evidence of authorship in peer-reviewed scientific publications
*
Track record of identifying and adopting scientific and technical advances
Desired for the role

Experience in drug development in pharmaceutical or biotech industries

Experience in managing external collaborations
*
Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop junior members of the team.
