We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished Associate Principal Scientist (APS) with experience in in cell-based and ex-vivo models of type 2 diabetes, obesity and/or NASH, plus a track record of scientific excellence, to join our Cardiovascular and Renal Metabolism group (CVRM). The position is placed at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.

CVRM is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca which deliver candidate drugs into clinical development. CVRM Metabolism Bioscience department has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We are a team of professionals who are passionate about advancing science, to discover and develop novel therapeutics that will benefit patients suffering from diabetes, obesity, NASH, cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease.



What you'll do

As an Associate Principal Scientist (APS) you will bring your theoretical and practical expertise to lead efforts to support our drug projects globally, having direct impact on the entire drug discovery process and pipeline. You should demonstrate a passion for driving scientific research, combined with strong team working ethics, in order to progress our projects.

This is a key cross-functional position that requires comprehensive expertise and hands-on experience, for which you should be highly motivated, innovative, detail-oriented, creative and well organized. You will be expected to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks in line with the objectives of the department. As a member of our multidisciplinary CVRM team, you should share our dedication to publishing cutting-edge research and bringing new medicines to patients with Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic diseases.



Main Duties and Responsibilities
Working in this position within the Bioscience Metabolism in vitro Team, you will lead efforts to identify and validate novel targets and act as Bioscience lead for pipeline projects. The preclinical research you lead will characterize the biology of the targets and aid development of both small and large molecule drugs. You will be expected to collaborate with cross-functional teams including representatives from Discovery Sciences, Translational Medicine, DMPK and Safety to understand the translatability of these findings into the clinic.

As a highly organized, self-motivated individual with a strong scientific background you will contribute significantly to the practical delivery of project goals by remaining 'hands-on' in the laboratory, by providing expert advice, interpreting complex data to resolve issues and make high level recommendations. You will serve as a resource for others by sharing expertise within and beyond the bioscience function and ensuring communication between teams.



Essential for the role

*

Ph.D. with >5 years of research experience in an area relevant to Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic disease
*

Strong scientific background in metabolic disease, related comorbidities and/or complications
*

Independent working with minimal supervision to plan, conduct and analyze experiments
*

Highly developed problem solving and risk management skills, not limited to own area of expertise
*

Ability to drive, manage, execute and deliver results for complex multi-functional projects
*

Excellent communication and presentation skills to report data in a clear and concise manner, with a clear understanding of implications within the overall context of drug discovery
*

Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills together with evidence of delivery in a team-oriented environment
*

Evidence of authorship in peer-reviewed scientific publications
*

Track record of identifying and adopting scientific and technical advances



Desired for the role

Experience in drug development in pharmaceutical or biotech industries

Experience in managing external collaborations

Proven ability to manage, motivate and develop direct reports
