Subject area
The subject domestic animal anatomy and histology includes knowledge of organism structure, from whole animals to cellular structures and characteristics, with focus on food-producing animals, sport- and companion animals (horse, dog, cat, cattle, goat, sheep, pig, reindeer and poultry). The main focus in the subject area is tissue histology and methodology.
Duties
The holder of the position should within the subject area
• develop, lead, evaluate and participate in practical and theoretical teaching including examination at basic, advanced and doctoral level within the subject area anatomy and histology, primarily for veterinary and animal nursing students, but also on bachelor and master programs and postgraduate courses in veterinary medicine and animal science. Important teaching areas for the holder of the position are organ and tissue histology and methodology
• develop methods and use digital tools in teaching
• lead and contribute to developing internationally successful research within the subject area of relevance to both SLU and faculty activities
• develop research methodology within the subject area
• collaborate in teaching and clinical activities within and outside SLU
• collaborate with other research groups within SLU to strengthen university interdisciplinary activities
• develop and maintain national and international networks and collaboration with academia, relevant agencies, industries, organizations and society at large
• apply for external research funding at national and international level
• supervise PhD students within the subject area
• participate in and enhance the strategic development of the department, the faculty and SLU
• communicate research results and other relevant information to society
• carry out administrative assignments within the department, faculty and university
• have Swedish as a working language within two years.
Swedish and English are used in parallel at the department. The successful applicant will be able to perform several duties in English. However, as Swedish is the university’s principal language and all programs the department teaches are conducted in Swedish, the successful applicant is expected to teach and perform examinations in Swedish within two years of taking up the position. The department will provide support with language learning.
Qualifications
The successful applicant shall
• have a Degree of Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Biomedicine, Medicine, Pharmacy or Biology within a relevant subject
• hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in a subject relevant to the position
• demonstrate teaching expertise and have the ability to integrate research and scientific perspectives in teaching
• have experience of teaching at basic and advanced level
• have a good knowledge of English.
Assessment criteria
Assessment of the applicant’s suitability for employment as associate professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the qualifications required for the position.
The assessment of research expertise will take into account the following
• completed research initiatives and ongoing research within the subject, as well as its relevance and development potential for the faculty and the department
• experience from morphological studies using image analysis to illustrate cellular and physiological processes
• ability to independently initiate and conduct successful internationally recognized research
• ability to obtain external research funding in competition
• experience from supervision at doctoral level.
The assessment of teaching expertise will take into account the following
• planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of own teaching
• supervision and examination at basic and advanced level
• the ability to integrate research and scientific approaches into the pedagogical work
• experience of teaching histology
• training in teaching and learning in higher education, covering around 10 weeks, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways
• pedagogic vision and reflection.
Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant’s expertise in
• developing and managing activities and staff within the academy
• internal communication and collaboration
• collaboration with external stakeholders and society at large
• communicate research and development work
• apply digital methods in research, teaching and communication, for instance data management, image analysis and visualization techniques.
The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to be most suitable to carry out and develop the above mentioned duties and to contribute to the positive development of the organization.
