Associate Researcher

Associate Researcher

Arbetsbeskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

Job assignments
Microbiological cultivation and handling of pathogenic (Risk-Group 2) bacterial and fungal species. Handling and processing clinical patient samples (respiratory tract, urinary tract, blood, fecal samples) for proteomics-based and genomics-based analyses. Carry out PCR, real-time qPCR, phylotyping as well as preparation of samples for metabolomics (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)- and Mass Spectrometry (MS)-based) and Luminex/ELISA-based analyses for host immune-response proteomics investigations. Optimize genomic DNA extractions and purifications, applicable for different NGS microbial genomic DNA sequencing platforms, with focus on Oxford Nanopore long-read DNA sequencing and Illumina sequencing, as well as Sanger sequencing. Optimize bacterial cell surface- and whole-cell protein extractions and purifications, for Mass Spectrometry-based “proteotyping” analyses on antibiotic resistance and virulence factors of pathogenic bacterial strains. Carry out GC-based analyses of Cell Fatty Acid profiling, for comparative analyses of bacterial taxa. Participate in organizing research projects and preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-review journals. Interact with Research Scientists, Postdoctoral Researchers and Technicians, as well as students and visiting researchers, within a clinical research group setting.

Qualifications
Required qualifications: Bachelor degree in Biology or biology-related field from an accredited university with proficiency in written and spoken English. At least 5 years experience, since completing university studies, in a clinical microbiology laboratory. Experience handling and cultivating bacteria and fungi. Experience working with patient samples. Experience in genomic DNA extraction and purification from microorganisms and clinical samples. Experience with PCR-amplification protocols. Experience preparing bacterial and fungal samples for proteomics analyses.

Desired qualifications: Laboratory experience including the handling and cultivating of pathogenic (Risk-Group 2) bacterial and fungal species. Experience with the Marmur and MagnaPure genomic DNA extraction protocols. Experience working with Sanger raw DNA sequence data and comparative analyses of sequence data. Experience in genotypic, genomics and MS-based proteotyping analyses for species- and strain-identifications as well as characterization of antibiotic resistance. Experience with qPCR (Quantitative PCR). Experience with Luminex/ELISA-based analyses. Experience in anti-microbial susceptibility testing. Familiarity with identification and diagnostic analyses of bacteria by Gas Chromatography-based comparative cell fatty acid profile data. Experience in bacterial characterization and taxonomic classification of novel taxa.

The successful candidate will be organized and flexible with capacity to work independently within a group focused on microbial genomics and proteomics and characterisation of a broad range of bacterial taxa.

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 6 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
