The Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry
Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry develops knowledge and teach on the common domestic animals form and function. We work with livestock, sports- and accompanying animals as well as experimental animals, wildlife, insects and spiders. We teach at the basic subject’s anatomy, histology, physiology and biochemistry on all research programs at the faculty. We do research and research education within fields that stretch from molecular and cellular mechanisms to the form and function of the whole animal, as well as how animals are affected by physical labor, production, stress, diseases, management and environmental factors. We are situated in VHC and are about 50 employees.

Subjec area
The subject area anatomy with special emphasis on functional anatomy concerns how muscular, mechanical and neurological principles cooperate- and govern animal movements. The subject comprises research on functional aspects of movements and the supportive functions of the body (clinical movement mechanics) , diagnostics and rehabilitation that aims to benefit animal health and animal welfare. 

Duties
The associate senior lecturer shall develop her/his own research line in the field of functional anatomy. Focus shall be on increased understanding of clinical movement mechanic, orthopedic diagnostics and rehabilitation. Research is expected to be carried out in close collaboration with colleagues at the department that focus on horse biomechanics as well as through national collaboration.

In addition, the associate senior lecturer shall:


• apply for external funding for the subject area
• publish referee assessed scientific articles
• act as co-supervisor for grad students
• plan, develop, teach and examine theory and practice on basic and advanced level
• contribute to the university obligations
• pursue pedagogical training.

Qualifications
Eligible for employment as associate senior lecturer are candidates who hold a PhD within a subject area with relevance for the research topic or have equivalent academic qualifications. Priority will be given to candidates who have received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no longer than five years before the application deadline. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary grounds for doing so. Extraordinary grounds refer to illness, parental leave or similar circumstances.

A basic degree in veterinary medicine and Swedish veterinary license is a requirement. Applicants must be able to teach in Swedish and have very good knowledge of written and spoken English.

Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate senior lecturer will primarily emphasize the applicant’s scientific skills in movement mechanics in the horse. In the assessment of scientific competence, secondary emphasis will be given publications in acknowledged scientific journals with peer-review, acquired external research funding and time spent in different research departments within the same university or at other universities (e.g. postdoc). In addition, the ability of the successful candidate to develop a independent research profile within the topic for the employment and the capacity to acquire the necessary qualifications for promotion to senior lecturer during the employment period.

Furthermore, emphasis will also be given experiences from teaching, supervision, examination and course development on undergraduate level within the topic of the employment, from experiences from supervision at graduate level and from completed university pedagogic courses/training.

Emphasis will also be given personal qualities and personal suitability, outreach network within the equestrian business and interest organizations.

Form of Employment:
The employment is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Act. A position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying employment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer has the right during his or her employment to apply for promotion to senior lecturer on the basis of criteria established when the position as associate senior lecturer was announced.
