Subjec area
We are looking for an associate senior lecturer with a genuine and documented interest in applied plant protection in horticulture who wants to be part of the development of future plant protection in collaboration with the university, extension services, as well as the plant production and plant protection industries. The purpose is to help ensure that fundamental knowledge from plant protection research can be translated into practical plant protection strategies that are environmentally and economically sustainable. A deep understanding of modern horticultural production systems is vital.
Duties
The holder is expected to conduct applied plant protection research and extension in one or more production systems relevant to Northern European horticulture.
Tasks include:
• conducting applied research in horticultural plant protection with a focus on sustainable production
• developing research hypotheses, including the integration of perspectives from other actors in plant protection
• building and further developing networks with industries, government agencies, the scientific community and other stakeholders, nationally and internationally
• seeking external research funding
• communicating research results within the subject area, to both scientific and non-scientific audiences
• participating in teaching at undergraduate and graduate level
Qualifications
The applicant should:
• have received a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area no longer than five years before the application deadline
• be scientifically skilled in applied plant protection and have documented skills in extension
• demonstrate a good ability to communicate (both in writing and orally) in Swedish, or another Scandinavian language, and English
Assessment criteria
On consideration for appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer emphasis is primarily put on qualitative indicators of the applicant’s academic skills. Furthermore, the assessment includes evaluating the applicant's ability to develop an independent line of research within the research field, and to meet the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer in the context of the employment qualifications. The assessment of scientific skills will consider:
• Scientific publications, and other measurable outputs, in applied research and development
• Previous and ongoing research, including projects with the potential to lead to new innovations
• Documented experience of attracting external research funding
• Research on production systems relevant to horticulture in northern Europe
• The potential of the candidates proposed research to complement ongoing biological plant protection projects at the department
The assessment of relevant extension skills will consider:
• Documented skills in planning and implementing collaboration with actors both within and outside of universities
• Knowledge in applied plant protection and production relevant for northern Europe
The assessment of pedagogical competence will consider:
• Documented experience in planning, implementing and evaluating teaching
• The ability to integrate research and scientific approaches into the pedagogical work
During the selection process, scientific skills, pedagogic skills and extension skills are ranked as equally important.
Emphasis will be placed on documented experience demonstrating the ability to integrate basic and applied research and innovation, and translating such research results into practical applications in collaboration with stakeholders. Of particular interest is knowledge that can complement the biological projects at the department with other competences, and a genuine interest in applied questions. Emphasis will also be placed on pedagogical skills and a good ability to communicate.

Form of Employment:
The employment is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Act. A position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying employment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer has the right during his or her employment to apply for promotion to senior lecturer on the basis of criteria established when the position as associate senior lecturer was announced.
