Research within computer networking and distributed systems constitutes one of the main research profiles of the department, and is carried out within the DISCO research group. Research within DISCO is focused on development of transport and application layer protocols, cross-layer interactions and the design of future 4G wireless systems, including Wireless Mesh and AdHoc Networks. The majority of the research is carried out within externally funded research projects and we have a vast number of international, national and regional collaborators. Duties The main duty of the post is research within the field of computer networking, with a particular focus on transport and higher layer protocols and cross-layer interactions. The research is conducted within one or several of the externally funded projects in the area and a close collaboration with industrial and academic partners are expected. The candidate is expected to contribute to an expanded external funding through applications for grants at the national and international level. Some research administration may also be part of the duties. The duties also include teaching in computer networking and related subjects, course administration and development, course coordination, and the supervision of thesis work at graduate and undergraduate levels. Requirements To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in Computer Networking or have corresponding qualifications. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than five years before the last date for applications, unless special grounds exist in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 8a. The ability to teach computer networking at basic and advanced level and software development at basic level is a further requirement. Special attention will be given to the quality of research, and to past experience with externally funded research projects involving industrial collaboration. Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of transport layer protocols, signalling networks and session mobility is an advantage. Karlstad University values personal qualities such as ability to cooperate and establish good relations with colleagues and students as well as resourcefulness and empathy.
