Associate senior lecturer in landscape architecture

Subjec area
The subject of the associate senior lecturer is arts-based research in landscape architecture that aims to understand and respond to sustainability challenges. The subject integrates artistic methods and reflexive approaches firmly rooted in the arts and humanities.

Duties
The associate senior lecturer shall develop their own research profile within the subject area for the employment and be given development opportunities to be able to qualify as an associate professor and senior lecturer within the subject.

The associate senior lecturer will be part of the subject area Design Theory and contribute to realizing the group’s mid to long term goal of becoming nationally and internationally recognized as an academic platform for landscape design theory.

The associate senior lecturer is expected to develop the subject of arts-based research in landscape architecture through


• Publishing research results in different formats (ranging from international peer reviewed journals to alternative formats such as exhibitions or competition entries). The successful candidate will further develop research leadership through successful applications for external funding, through the planning, management, and execution of research projects, as well as through advising doctoral students;
• research-based teaching on all levels of the educational cycle. The holder of the position is furthermore expected to continuously develop as an educator, and to develop educational leadership;
• collaborating with colleagues involved in landscape architecture and arts-based research within the subject area Design Theory, the Division of Landscape Architecture, the Department of Urban and Rural Development, the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management, and other units at SLU. Cooperation could also include municipalities, planning authorities and other universities in Sweden and abroad.

The department has a dual-language work environment. The associate senior lecturer will be able to perform most of their tasks in English. However, as the university is Swedish speaking, the associate senior lecturer is expected to be able to work and teach in Swedish within four years of taking up employment. The department will support the holder to achieve this.

Qualifications
Those holding a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification are eligible to apply for the position as Associate Senior Lecturer. The candidate should preferably have held this degree or qualification for no more than five years before the closing date for applications for this position. Even those who have completed a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence previously may, however, be considered if there are special reasons. For special reasons, leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances is considered.

The associate senior lecturer must have


• a PhD in landscape architecture, architecture, environmental design, or in related disciplines with relevance for the position’s subject; or a Master’s degree or equivalent in landscape architecture and a PhD in Fine Arts, Applied Arts or related fields with relevance for the subject

Assessment criteria
The position of associate senior lecturer is intended for individuals who have some teaching and supervision experience at undergraduate and advanced level. Further, creative work in scholarship, research, artistic practice, professional practice, or a combination thereof, indicating that they have a promising future in their academic career and may be viable candidates for tenure.

We are seeking to appoint candidates who have


• shown theoretical depth in scholarly outputs that are of relevance to the subject;
• demonstrated an ability to publish research internationally;
• experience in scholarship and teaching relating to the subject of the position;
• excellent ability to communicate in written and spoken English.

Experience of research environments outside of SLU equivalent to a post-doctoral period, or a degree from another university, is meritorious, as is artistic or professional experience.

In considering the candidate’s merits for appointment as associate senior lecturer, emphasis is put on quality before quantity, i.e. we assess primarily qualitative indicators of the applicant’s academic skills and merits.

Form of Employment:
The employment is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Act. A position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying employment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer has the right during his or her employment to apply for promotion to senior lecturer on the basis of criteria established when the position as associate senior lecturer was announced.
