Department of Clinical Sciences
The Department of Clinical Sciences is responsible for basic education, research and postgraduate education in the fields of veterinary medicine, animal care and animal science. The department's activities mainly concern our common Swedish domesticated animal species (pets) with a focus on anaesthesiology, imaging, animal care, epidemiology, laboratory animal medicine, surgery, clinical chemistry, medicine and animal reproduction.

Subject description

Large animal surgery includes surgical treatments and method development on horses and pigs, as well as the large and small ruminants commonly found in Sweden. The aim of surgical treatment is to restore or optimise biological function and minimise potential suffering. It also includes procedures such as castration and dehorning performed in animal husbandry.

Essentially, the subject is divided into general and specialised surgery, which includes traditional soft tissue surgery and orthopaedic surgery, but there are also sub-specialities such as ophthalmology and dentistry.

Duties

This is a fixed-term appointment (4 years) as regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance. The role of associate senior lecturer is a career-development position that is the first step on the academic career path at SLU. The associate senior lecturer must develop an individual research profile within their subject. Research is expected to take place in collaboration with researchers both at the department and throughout the university. National and international collaborations are also expected. During their employment, an associate senior lecturer is entitled to apply for an evaluation review for promotion to senior lecturer. They will be assessed based on the criteria that are established when advertising the position of associate senior lecturer.

In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to


• compete for external research funding and publish scientific articles;
• act as an assistant supervisor for doctoral students;
• plan, develop, teach and examine theoretical and practical components at first, second and third cycle levels;
• actively participate in clinical work and teaching
• participate in the required training in teaching and learning in higher education;
• collaborate and communicate with relevant players in the community;
• be able to use Swedish as the working language within two years.

The department uses Swedish and English in parallel. The associate senior lecturer should be able to perform the majority of their tasks in English. However, as SLU is a Swedish-speaking university, the professor must be able to use Swedish as their working language within four years of beginning the position. The department will provide support with language learning.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position as associate senior lecturer, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree or hold the equivalent academic expertise. Primary consideration should be given to someone who has been awarded a doctoral degree, or fulfils the eligibility requirement within five years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. 

The applicant must


• demonstrate scientific competence in the subject for the appointment;
• be licensed to practise veterinary medicine in Sweden, alternatively be entitled to obtain such a licence upon application in accordance with the relevant legislation, regulations and directives*
• have documented, current clinical experience with patient responsibility in the subject
• have good knowledge of English;

Eligibility regulations, Swedish Board of Agriculture’s regulations and general advice on eligibility requirements for veterinary care staff (SJVFS 2016:9), Chapter 2. Eligibility to practise as a veterinary surgeon and the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as associate senior lecturer must be the degree of expertise required as qualification for employment.

Additionally, the following are to be assessed:


• The ability to develop an independent research profile within the subject for the appointment.
• The applicant has what is needed to meet the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer as part of the career-development position.
• The applicant has experience of both theoretical and clinical teaching at first cycle level
• Experience and scope of clinical activities with patient responsibility in the subject
• Experience in communicating research and development work.

The appointment will be offered to the applicant who, following a qualitative comprehensive assessment, is in the best position to to conduct and develop the duties in question, and contribute to the positive development of the organisation.
