Northvolt offers an exciting opportunity for an Automation Engineer to be part of building Europe's first battery factories, pivotal in the shift toward a carbon-free society!
As a key member of our central automation engineering team in Västerås, you will contribute to the design and engineering of automation systems for various Northvolt Gigafactories. Collaborating closely with the design and software engineering teams, you will play a crucial role in implementing a highly automated production process.

We are looking for a candidate with extensive experience in driving large, innovative, and challenging automation projects. Your proven track record should demonstrate the successful implementation of advanced automation systems in relevant industries. Specifically, if your expertise includes integrating diverse and complex equipment into higher automation layers, contributing to the development of some of the world's most advanced control systems.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop the automation systems to be implemented in the production and logistics equipment in the factory as well as the relevant specifications and documentation.
Author and review Engineering Design Documentation (Specifications, Functional design, Logic diagrams, Test Cases, Test Records).
Identify and interact with key automation solution suppliers. Drive workshops and onboarding these suppliers to the Northvolt automation standards and collaborate with selected suppliers to implement state-of-the-art automation systems.
Support and collaborate with equipment purchasing specialists and the project team to select the most proficient equipment suppliers from an automation perspective.
Responsible for the FATs of the equipment and supporting the commissioning of the equipment.
Organize and take part in internal training and workshops.
Cost estimations for projects and change requests. Provide input for quoting and planning works.
Code review and test of suppliers work within the projects to validate specified functionality and to ensure the quality and reliability of the data transferred from the equipment to the upper-level systems.
Contribute to the development of tools to aid the production, operations, and maintenance teams to run the most advanced and efficient production factory in the world.
Participate in R&D activities for piloting of new technologies and their suitability to production environments.
Define and improve the factory blueprint, general specifications and ways of working in collaboration with the extended automation and digitalization teams.
Contribute to technical improvements, development and optimization of software processes internally in the automation team.

Skills & Requirements
Education/Experience
Degree in Electronics, Mechatronics, Electrical, Automation, Robotics, Software Engineering or similar.
Experience within Industrial Automation in process-driven or discrete manufacturing industries such as Battery Cell, Automotive, Mining, Chemical, Paper, Semiconductors, Pharma, Food, Packaging, Warehouses, etc.
Experience working with sensors, instrumentation, servo drives and motion technology.
Experience with PLC, SCADA, OPC connectivity and MES interfaces, especially using Siemens and Beckhoff systems.
Design of control systems architecture and PLC code delivering the desired system functionality.
Experience in writing technical documentation (Requirement specifications, Functional design, UML, Test Cases, Test Records).
Knowledge of European Directives and relevant ISO, IEC and safety standards.
Excellent stakeholder and supplier management.
Must be open to travel to the different Northvolt offices and factories and to supplier visits.
Must have worked in a multicultural environment.
