The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Automation Engineer Motion Control position.
Description of directorate/division
The Science Directorate comprises a total of five divisions which, during the construction period of ESS, will support activities related to the design and actual construction of neutron scattering instruments but also activities related to providing supporting infrastructure such as laboratories, while developing an active scientific programme to support not only the neutron scattering instruments but also the future users which will be using such instruments. All activities within the Science Directorate rely to great extend on extensive collaborations amongst not only the European but world-wide neutron scattering user community, which results in a very dynamic and interesting work environment that will deliver a multi-disciplinary research centre based on the worlds most powerful neutron source.
Job description: The successful candidate will support the design, construction, commissioning and operation of ESS Neutron Scattering Instruments as expert in Motion Control & Automation (MCA):
• Define, evaluate and test components and functionalities of a standardised motion control system deployed by MCAG to all ESS projects
• Support 3 to 4 Neutron Instrument construction teams during all project phases being the key contact partner for MCA technology
• Manage and perform motion control work packages contracted to MCAG from the different instrument construction projects and other projects inside ESS including short-term placements of one to two months at our partner institutes in Europe.
• Prepare and guide in-kind collaboration on testing motion control components in harsh environment including project planning, preparation of the in-kind contracts and supervising the progress
• Commission and maintain the installed motion control technology on the Neutron Instruments
• Operational support of Neutron Instruments beyond standard working hours to ensure high availability during the User Programme
Qualifications: Master degree (MSc) in Electrical Engineering with a strong focus on Motion Control and Automation preferably in both Bachelor and Master studies
• Experience in design and programming of motion control systems for scientific large-scale user facilities, experience in running the appropriated evaluation and test procedures
• Knowledge of instrumentation of Neutron Scattering Instruments and it's associated motion control and automation techniques as well as a good knowledge of motion control components and it's use in radiation environment is essential
• Knowledge in machine safety (EN ISO 13849 and other relevant standards) is a plus
• Experience in managing small development projects and interfacing with scientists and scientific project managers
• Practical experience in setting up automation control systems including installation and cabling according to wiring diagrams is a plus

Duration & Location
This is a permanent position with a 6 month probation period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
