Baltic marine scientific researcher positions; understanding and promoting a healthy ocean
Voice Of The Ocean (VOTO): Ocean Knowledge is looking to recruit two early-mid career scientists to join the team. Researchers will work with high-resolution, continuous oceanographic time-series collected by autonomous vehicles in the Baltic Sea. These positions should address any biological, chemical and/or physical oceanography topics supporting an understanding of Baltic ecosystem health. We welcome proposals from interested candidates which can leverage VOTO infrastructure and data.
VOTO is a foundation working to help scientists across institutions and countries to understand the Baltic Sea marine system by collecting and publishing openly accessible data, and by providing instrumentation and vessels to researchers. Through independent projects and long-term observatories, VOTO seeks to support cutting edge marine science in the Baltic Sea. At VOTO, we deploy both underwater and surface autonomous instrumentation to collect high-resolution datasets of vital ocean variables, across physical, chemical and biological parameters and work with industrial partners to develop new tools for marine science.
The Baltic Sea ecosystem is under strong and sustained anthropogenic pressure, with dramatic impacts on its biological and chemical functioning, despite its critical role to the 90 million people who live in its catchment. VOTO is particularly interested in refining our understanding of how processes are coupled across disciplines and at scales that we do not yet understand in the Baltic Sea – in particular extreme events, how circulation and oceanic inflows affect hypoxic extent, cyanobacteria blooms and fisheries health.
We are looking for two driven researchers who hold a PhD in physical, chemical, or biological oceanography and have a good track record of publishing and presenting at international level. Your area of specialism should complement some, or all, of the data types collected by our instrumentation (details below), and you should ideally have some previous knowledge of the Baltic Sea region. You will work closely with our science team at VOTO as well as researchers at the University of Gothenburg and other Baltic institutions.
You will have the ability to establish your own research direction using the data available at VOTO; furthermore, as part of VOTO you will influence equipment purchases to be deployed in the Baltic Sea. VOTO offers a supportive team, cutting edge technology and research ships, and opportunities to collaborate with various Baltic Sea communities and researchers as well as funding to attend conferences and publish. There will be the opportunity to be affiliated with the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. We anticipate that you will be involved in active fieldwork, deploying and remotely piloting the autonomous vehicles.
Our fleet consists mainly of SeaExplorer gliders and Sailbuoy surface vehicles. These measure:
Temperature, salinity, pressure
Dissolved oxygen concentration
Chlorophyll & phycocyanin fluorescence, optical backscatter
PAR and irradiance across several channels
Ocean current velocity and acoustic backscatter from ADCPs
Surface variables: air temperature, wind speed/direction, sea surface temperature, salinity
Other sensors are in development (eg. nitrate)

We currently maintain observatories in Skagerrak and Bornholm Basin and will initiate the third observatory in the Gotland Basin spring 2022. These vehicles are supported by two small state of the art research vessels.

This position is open to early-mid career scientists, with a flexible starting salary to reflect the successful applicants’ experience. As a foundation, VOTO is able to provide a competitive salary and generous benefits. The position is based in Gothenburg, Sweden and is time-limited to 23 months. Applicants are expected to have the ability to live and work in the EU.
Qualifications/merirts:
PhD at time of appointment.
Experience in either biological, chemical or physical oceanography.
Has presented and published at international level.
Interest/experience in autonomous instrumentation.
Knowledgeable about the Baltic Sea ecosystem or other shelf seas.
Ability to collaborate across disciplines and with people of diverse expertise.
Ability to work independently and also to participate in collaborative groups.
Comfortable working with large datasets in various formats.
Has strong quantitative and coding skills (e.g. python, R) for data analysis.
Ability to live and work in the EU.
Ability to go to sea.
