Beamline scientist MicroMAX – Time-resolved crystallography (2-years)

Beamline scientist MicroMAX – Time-resolved crystallography (2-years)

Arbetsbeskrivning

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

MAX IV Laboratory has received funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (http:// novonordiskfonden.

dk/en) for a new beamline called MicroMAX (https://www.maxiv.lu.se/micromax/), a micro-focus macromolecular crystallography beamline. The Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) Group is responsible for the design, construction and future operation of the MicroMAX beamline, as well as for the BioMAX beamline that is in user operation.

MicroMAX will extend the possibilities in macromolecular crystallography in particular in the areas of serial crystallography and time-resolved crystallography. By exploiting the pioneering performance of the MAX IV 3-GeV storage ring, MicroMAX will provide world class performance for experiments requiring a highly brilliant microfocus X-ray beam. The microfocus beam will be used for highly automated, monochromatic rotation crystallography, but the unique beam will be in particular beneficial for time-resolved experiments and serial crystallography. The time-resolved activity will use a UV-vis-IR laser setup for triggering of light sensitive samples or using caged-compounds, ligand-mixing using microfluidics, and other methods and instrumentation to study dynamics. The sample environment laboratory and a second experiment hutch are available to support and extend the capabilities of the time-resolved setup in the first experiment hutch. We have started developing activities in the field of serial crystallography and regularly perform experiments at BioMAX.

We are now looking for a beamline scientist for a 2-years position to drive the development of time-resolved activities at MicroMAX.

Work duties and areas of responsibility

- Drive the development of time-resolved crystallography experiments at MicroMAX
- Define technical requirements and follow-up with procurements and technical implementation with the help of the MicroMAX team and the MX group and other groups at the facility
- As a member of the MicroMAX team you will work towards the main goal of the MicroMAX team, that is to complete the construction of the MicroMAX beamline and develop it to a user facility producing important scientific results
- Plan and prepare experiments in collaboration with users and the MX group and engage in scientific applications in this field
- Together with the other members of the MX group you will develop the MX user facilities and support user experiments

Requirements

- PhD in relevant field
- Experience of time-resolved science, methods and techniques
- Knowledge of relevant instrumentation
- Ability to cooperate and work in a team, but also an ability to work independently
- Good communication skills, and an excellent command of English, both oral and written

Desirable

- Knowledge of macromolecular crystallography and experience of time-resolved crystallography
- Protein spectroscopy experience, preferably with protein crystals
- Experience working at a large-scale facility and of supporting users
- Experience of operating and using laser systems including optics and safety systems
- Knowledge of instrumentation, in particular relevant for MicroMAX, such as synchronisation electronics, choppers and X-ray detectors.
- Knowledge of Python and Linux systems

Other
The successful candidate takes initiative, is structured and creative, has the ability to cooperate and works well with complex issues.

Attending meetings, including international meetings, might be required because of the collaborations with other facilities and institutes
