Bioprocess Engineer/Senior Bioprocess Engineer

Background:
Melt&Marble (meltandmarble.com) is a start-up company on a mission to boost the growth of the plant-based industry by providing it with the best and tastiest fats, for both consumers and the planet. We do this by using precision fermentation. By engineering microbial metabolism, we can dictate the structure and properties of the fats that our microbes are producing, allowing us to mimic any fat structure, as well as create completely new and better fats. This results in sustainable vegan fats that can mimic the sensory experience of animal fats, bridging the taste gap between animal-based foods and plant-based alternatives.


Position summary:
We are looking for a bright, enthusiastic and experienced bioprocess engineer to work on optimizing bioprocesses for production of microbial lipids. Successful applicants will be responsible for the fermentation R&D at Melt&Marble, including evaluation of yeast strains in bioreactors, optimization of bioprocess parameters, process scale-up and DSP development. You will work closely with the strain development team and provide feedback on microbial engineering strategies. The position is part hands-on laboratory work, but also includes organizational tasks and supervision of others.
Our ideal candidate should have a strong track record in bioprocess engineering, exceptional organizational skills, and a passion for using science & technology to solve tough challenges. The candidate should also be comfortable working in the dynamic environment of a start-up company, troubleshooting challenging projects, and meeting tight deadlines.
Occasionally, some activities may require working outside of standard working hours. The position will likely require travel within Sweden and abroad.


Responsibilities and tasks:
Evaluate strains in bioreactors, including analysis of metabolic, physiological, and performance parameters of yeast strains
Design and optimize bioprocesses to improve strain performance (titers, rates, yields, growth)
Support the development of downstream processes
Oversee scale-up of bioprocesses from lab scale to industrial scale
Prepare technical reports, SOPs, and presentations
Assist in identifying and securing IPR
Find and coordinate with appropriate collaboration partners and suppliers to support above activities



Required qualifications:
Candidates should hold an Msc or PhD in bioprocess engineering, chemical engineering, or a similar field
>4 years of fulltime experience working with microbial fermentation, preferably with yeasts and production of derived products
Strong expertise with different bioprocesses, including batch, fed-batch, and continuous processes
Experience with the modelling/simulation of bioprocesses
Experience in optimization of cultivation media
Existing knowledge about upstream/downstream processes
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Preferably authorized to work in Sweden (Sweden/EU citizen or permanent resident)



Bonus points:
Work experience in a commercial setting
Experience with production of lipids
Experience with analytics (HPLC, GC-MS, etc.)
Experience in scaling up processes from lab to pilot, demo, and/or commercial scale
Experience with downstream processing
Experience with quality control of bioprocesses (GMP, GLP standards)
Leadership experience (supervision, project coordination with external parties, etc.)
