The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, and founded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. Every year, the Institute hosts over 2000 visits by scientists, who come to carry out world-class research in condensed matter physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. The Projects and Techniques Division, which is responsible for the development of the ILL's instruments and for technical support, currently has a vacancy for a:
Building Maintenance Technician
Duties:
As a member of the Technical Installations group, you will be involved in carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance and modifications on existing installations in the following areas:
- Plumbing: miscellaneous work on PVC, copper and steel pipe work,
- Maintenance of and modifications to sanitation systems: water supply, waste and rainwater,
- Modifications to compressed air and industrial water supply systems,
- Heating: distribution systems and associated equipment,
- Ventilation: duct systems and associated equipment,
- Air conditioning: refrigeration compressors and chilled-water / refrigerant distribution systems,
- General site maintenance, miscellaneous tasks,
- Wood and metal joinery (frames, doors and windows),
- Load handling and related work.
Qualifications and experience:
- Level 2 qualification (e.g. NVQ or BTEC) or equivalent qualification in commercial/industrial building maintenance or plumbing, together with some initial experience in an industrial environment,
Practical experience of soldering, autogenous welding and PVC bonding,
- Ability to read sketches/drawings,
- Taste for teamwork, compliance with safety instructions.
Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. Fluency in French is required. Knowledge of English and/or German would be an advantage.

This post is a permanent position.
Medical fitness for work under ionising radiation (in radiation-controlled areas) is required. You must also be fit to work outdoors, at height and underground.
You must have a category B driving licence (light vehicles).
Post based in Grenoble and subject to administrative screening.
