Are you a chemical engineer with practical experience of using laboratory automation technologies for setting up and running chemistry experiments? Are you interested in becoming part of a growing team focusing on the autonomous synthesis of bioactive molecules at a company where we are committed to lifelong learning, growth, and development? Welcome to AstraZeneca!
We are seeking a Chemical Automation Engineer with extensive experience in applying laboratory automation technologies to the execution of chemistry experiments to play an important part in our Chemistry Automation team. We're focusing on building an industry-leading end-to-end chemistry automation platform. In this multidisciplinary, multinational team you can drive and advance our chemistry automation capabilities at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden.
We are a global, science-led BioPharmaceutical business and our innovative medicines are used by millions of patients worldwide. With our ground-breaking pipeline comes a bright future - a secure job, exciting opportunities, and varied work. You will be valued. What you will do:
After an introductory period in which you will be introduced to the technologies and programming languages used on our current automated chemistry platform, you will be responsible for the daily operation of this platform. This includes programming of automation workflows, ensuring optimal equipment performance and usage, instant troubleshooting as well as identification and testing of new devices. Throughout all of this you will work closely with your colleagues from the associated synthetic chemistry team to ensure the successful and timely delivery of new screening compounds from the platform. You will identify, design and program improved or new automated compound synthesis processes and systems to increase platform reliability and efficiency.
Furthermore, you will be integrally involved in the build of the next generation end-to-end chemistry automation platform and work with colleagues and external partners on the design of individual automation modules. You will play a key role during factory and site acceptance test activities for the new platform and in the years to come you will be responsible for optimal platform operation as well as continuous workflow and equipment improvements. As a Chemical Automation Engineer, you will have access to the best internal and external science and be expected to enhance business reputation both internally and externally through peer-reviewed publications and oral/poster presentations.
Essential in the role:
You're a chemistry or laboratory automation engineer with a record of accomplishment of applying innovative hard- and/or software solutions to challenging projects. You also have:
* Ph.D. in chemistry engineering or alternatively a MSc degree in chemistry engineering with a minimum of five years industrial experience.
* Hands on experience with creating lab automation workflows and a strong interest in developing novel approaches and technologies for automated compound synthesis.
* Experience in soft- and hardware troubleshooting (maintenance of instruments like liquid handlers, analytical equipment, flow chemistry reactors, robot arms, etc.).
* Particularly good knowledge and understanding of recent developments in chemistry automation.
Desirable in the role:
* Basic programming skills in e.g., C#, Python.
* Good understanding of organic chemistry and some degree of practical experience in the synthesis of new compounds.
The successful candidate should be motivated to work effectively in hardworking teams and demonstrate ability to work across scientific fields to drive project success. You should have the ability to communicate in a good way, a high scientific drive and a long-term commitment to advancing chemistry automation as an innovative tool in drug discovery.
