Our Outstanding Opportunity
Automation in mobile networks has been gaining significant attention in the Swedish industry. The challenge of autonomous control, monitoring, management and configuration procedures of Mobile Networks are to improve Quality of Service (QoS) defined by Key Performance Indicators. In particular, the PhD project aims to develop and evaluate Reinforcement Learning techniques for critical distributed decision-making in future live mobile networks. In order to address the mission criticality in networks, Reinforcement Learning ideas will be combined with formal logics and model-checking.
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic candidate with solid course track record and passion for research to conduct industrial PhD studies within the aforementioned area of network automation and control through a combined framework of reinforcement learning and formal strategies that guarantee scalability and performance.

From the academic side, the PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Jana Tumova (https://people.kth.se/~tumova/home.html) and her team at division of Robotics, Perception and Learning (RPL) of KTH Royal Institute of Technology (https://www.kth.se/rpl). From the industrial side, there will be collaboration with researchers at Artificial Intelligence unit (Aneta Vulgarakis Feljan, Alexandros Nikou).

You will
Work in the international workplace with leading industrial researchers and top academic researchers (RPL division) that will assist in development of technical skills
Collaborate, interact and be supervised by a diverse team of specialists of the field
Access to RPL facilities at KTH, as well as Ericsson software and hardware recourses. Office will be provided by both partners
Participate in top workshops and conferences
Be having an opportunity of taking PhD courses in both Swedish and European universities
Become an equal member of an AI research team at Ericsson Research and have 5 years of an industrial PhD position
Be eligible to have a competitive salary according to Ericsson’s collective agreement for early stage researchers


To be successful in the role one must have
MSc in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or similar area
Availability of working and presence in Stockholm, Sweden full-time
Knowledge of in reinforcement learning and/or telecommunication systems. Familiarity with formal methods and model checking background will be a considered a merit
Solid mathematical background (calculus, algebra, probability theory, statistics, optimization, etc.)
Excellent writing and communication skills in English
Programming skills in Python documented by projects


Starting date
Flexible between January 2021 – June 2021.
