The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Cooling Systems Engineer.
Description of division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the ESS accelerator. The cooling system engineer in the Specialised Technical Services Group will be responsible for technical water-cooling systems, working alongside partner institutions and other groups in the Accelerator, Target, Integrated Control System, Instruments, and Conventional Facilities divisions to develop the design of these systems, including the definition of interfaces with other groups. The cooling system engineer will also be responsible for specifying and procuring water cooling equipment and overseeing the installation and commissioning of this system during construction. ESS is implementing a unique energy management concept that includes the goal of being Responsible, Renewable, Recyclable, and Reliable. One significant aspect of the cooling system engineer job is to design a system that maximises heat recovery for recycling.
Main responsibilities
• Liaison with partner institutions including the attendance at coordination meetings, witness of testing and other associate activities
• Preparation and development of water cooling system requirements specifications and other related documentation
• Design and integration of the ESS water cooling systems into technical components and systems requiring water cooling
• Thermodynamic and fluid analysis of the cooling water system
• Preparation, review and approval of technical documentation in support of the procurement of parts and equipment
• Preparation and development of integrated installation, test and commissioning plans for the cooling water system
• Oversight of manufacturers during the fabrication of components and equipment; reviewing and approving manufacturing plans and other vendor documentation, monitoring quality and witnessing of acceptance tests at the vendors' premises
• Technical support and oversight during the assembly, installation, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of accelerator, target and instrument cooling water systems
• Development of budgets, schedules and plans in support of cooling water system operations and developments and implementing of these plans within budgetary and schedule constraints
• Compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements
Qualifications
You have a Master's degree in engineering or physics and several years of work experience providing excellent knowledge of relevant systems and equipment as well as the ability to understand the fundamentals of the complex systems to be cooled, including the accelerator, cryogenic helium compressors and radiation safety. Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English, computer literacy and proficiency using MS Office and engineering modeling tools are required. Experience in the design, construction and operation of thermal management systems and hardware, and related control systems and ability to perform thermal and fluid flow analysis is mandatory. Prior experience in the managing of technicians and subcontractors responsible for fabricating, installing, commissioning and operating cooling water systems is desirable. Experience of working in an international environment is essential.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
