Arbetsbeskrivning
The European Spallation Source, ESS, a partnership of European countries, is hiring motivated and inspired people to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source.
ESS is now looking for a Cryogenics Engineer organised within the Cryogenic Group in the Technical Directorate.
The Cryogenics team works alongside other groups in the Accelerator Division to define, design, install, commission and finally operate and maintain the cryogenic systems of the ESS. These efforts extend also to cryogenic need in the Target Division and the Neutron Instruments Division.
Job description
Your main area of responsibilities as a Cryogenics Engineer will be to:
• Prepare integrated testing of coupled subassemblies of the various cryogenic systems at ESS with special focus on the Accelerator Cryoplant, the cryodistribution and the superconducting linac
• Lead commissioning and acceptance testing of cryogenic refrigerators, cryogenic distribution systems and cryogenic user equipment
• Perform detailed calculations and simulations on integrated cryogenic systems
• Operate and diagnose complex cryogenic system equipment and solve process related issues as they arise
• Analyse and finetune performance of cryoplants’ sub-components e.g. compressors, oil skids, cooling water units, cold machinery, instrumentation etc.
• Monitor and perform adjustments to control functions, parameters and configurations for optimal process control, accuracy, availability and efficiency
• Prepare operation and trouble-shooting descriptions as well as test reports
• Lead the technical specification of a spare compressor and oil system for the Accelerator Cryoplant
• Drive procurement and act subsequently as point of contact for the supplier of the spare compressor and oil system
• Lead the civil, mechanical, electrical and controls integration efforts of the spare compressor and oil system, supported by discipline experts at ESS
• Systematically collect and follow up all required documentation for operation and maintenance of the cryogenic system and collect and draft documentation for preparation of reviews and requirements of interfacing parts of the organisation
• Coordinate emergency response work directives with multiple parties as well as improve guidelines and procedures for safe operations
• Provide periodic and timely reporting, document accurately and comprehensively all interactions and occurrences with respect to the cryogenic systems
You will also support the Cryogenic group leader, engineers and operators and communicate with colleagues, consultants and suppliers to ensure safe and timely commissioning, testing and stable operation of the relevant equipment and processes of the ESS machine. Training and support in procurement and related procedures will be provided.

• A minimum of 5 years experience in design, installation and commissioning of cryogenic plants and components in large research infrastructure facilities or equivalent organisations
• A minimum of 2 years experience in working with pressurized equipment and piping, knowledge of related PED and ISO standards
• A minimum of 2 years experience in working with rotating machinery, particularly compressors and turbo expanders, high performance heat exchangers, typical process plant instrumentation and SCADA
• A minimum of 1 year experience in simulating complex processes with commercially available software like Modelica or equivalent
• Strong analytical and computational skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
